Who Is Going To Have The Guts To Step Up And Build The First SERIOUS Challenger To The Mazda MX-5?
Before Honda decided to become a monotonous blob that only builds vehicles for unenthusiastic commuters, the Japanese automaker had a hand in the sports car segment with the S2000. It may not have been the fastest, the most enjoyable, or even the best sports car from the automaker, but the S2000 was a special sports car and deserves to come back to take the fight to the Mazda MX-5 Miata. What's that got to do Miatas? TVRs are for men who think 500hp is adequate and Miatas are for people who think 200 or more horsepower is immoral.

As for TVR they took bids last summer and sold out their first year's projected build.

In that price range it is difficult to make a business case to build that kind of roadster sports car. Both GM and Toyota have tried it. Mini supposedly is coming out with a Roadster in 2019. However I seriously doubt it will be less than 35K. Fiat is sharing costs with Mazda so it is able to do it. It will offer a different powertrain and different styling but chassis wise its all Miata. Toyota and Subaru may share a future platform with an FRS/BRZ replacement. However that's a big if.

With Mazda and Toyota collaborating sort of, I say reskin the Miata and throw in a turbo Toyota engine and call it good.

I just test drove the new 2016 MX-5 with manual. Very nice balanced light weight sports car but.....very small. And I mean VERY small cockpit.
