Alfa Romeo Christens New Crossover The Stelvio - Expect Next Year

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles boss Sergio Marchionne has finally christened its long-awaited, oft-delayed Alfa Romeo SUV. It will be called the Stelvio and is scheduled to start production in the final quarter of 2016, slated for sale early in 2017.

Code-named the Tipo 949 D-SUV, the Stelvio name is in homage of the famous mountain pass in Italy, which teases the Swiss border before heading north into southern Austria. Alternatively, Stelvio is also the name of a popular Italian cheese, an Italian National Park and a composer.

Alfas were sweet cars...loved my 1968 Duetto. Unfortunately today my only expectations from Alfa Romeo are delay, delay delay. I would be very surprised if we actually see one of these on sale before 2018 at the earliest.

A lot of huge expectations & big shoes to fill in the US.

If it's good & at least comparable (in style & performance) to its market competition, it can get some consumers into Fiats in the US.

I'd actually argue the opposite. In the USA, the vast majority of potential Alfa Romeo buyers know nothing of the brand and that it was (1) never premium and (2) always a quality/reliability/durability turd pile...and that's a good thing.

Sergio got it wrong, however. Alfa Romeo should have been an Italian Acura/Subaru with Maserati playing the role of the Italian BMW/Mercedes.

This and the Giulia should have been Maseratis.

Very beautiful CUV! Why didn't they hire the same designer to do the Giulia??

So the Stelvio is going to arrive just a couple months after the Giulia which is supposed to show up in November?

You know I will be impressed if and when Alfa actually starts to produce the Giulia at the plant, cars are shipped to dealers, and people actually start to buy them. Further it would be icing on the cake if the cars actually have a decent review. I know I'm speaking in "Utopian Philosophy". It's just that their has been so much talking, bragging, and then further delays regarding volume Alfa production that I am a bit jaded if their plans will actually work.
