BMW's New 8 Series Almost Ready To Mop The Floor With S-Class And Continental GT And Secure The Segment

The BMW 8 Series name will be resurrected on a new flagship model as part of moves to provide greater competition to long-time adversary Mercedes-Benz and its S-Class coupé, as well as the Bentley Continental GT .

The new 8 Series, tentatively due in 2020, is planned to be a technological flagship with driveline components, multi-material architecture, electrical system and connectivity solutions closely related to those used by the recently introduced sixth-generation 7 Series. It will be built at BMW’s Dingolfing factory in Germany from 2020, according to sources with knowledge of the German car maker’s future production plans.

M-B has owned this market for a long long time. My money is on them to hold their own against all comers including MW.

it wont be BMW.....lol...maybe if they offer a lease of 1000k down an $199/month.

I also vote for MB holding their own. I find it hard to imagine that a BMW 8-series will suddenly dislodge MB's crown. Especially when we're talking 4 years out with a 2020 model. A lot can happen, and will, between now and then.

Agreed, Mercedes will still lead the game but I am already also liking the 8 series

2020. So, by then, Mercedes would have issued an update for the current generation and likely introduced a brand new S-Class generation. Basically, it sounds like BMW has successfully put themselves in a position of playing continual catch-up. It would seriously take a Herculean effort on anyone's part to really leapfrog over the S-Class and create any separation. And if BMW thinks it will do it with the design here which already looks sadly outdated and unsexy compared to the CURRENT S-Class coupe, then they are gravely mistaken.

So, what do they consider the 7-series then? I thought that was always supposed to be the S-Class competitor. If they couldn't do it with the 7, how will they try to differ it with the 8?

Here we go with more cheerleading for BMW. NOTHING indicates that BMW has the willpower to field a gotta have car. Meet the new 7 Series same as the old 7 Series. Ditto the new 5 and most likely the 3.

My money is on Mercedes.

At this point I think Genesis has a better chance of toppling Mercedes than BMW, and Genesis is years away from that possibility.

Audi and BMW have given up.

Genesis cannot topple Mercedes - they are not in the same class of cars - they compete with Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Volvo, and Buick for second tier premium.

ANd BMW remains a SMALL SPORTS SEDAN manufacturer - not a Luxury car icon. THe 2-Door * series will have little effect on Mercedes Luxury S class.

@TomM your jingoism got in the way of understanding my sarcasm. Try to keep up with things, Felicia.

Well...bye, Felicia!

These luxury/premium/tier lists are hilarious. Very subjective within the forum world. Are they even real?!

The average consumer with the coin to buy any M-B, BMW, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Volvo, Cadillac, etc cross-shops all these brands. They're all luxury vehicle automakers. And as such, they're all competing for these same sales dollars. That any of you have divvied them into separate (tiers) is why the transaction prices have become so ridiculous & THEIR profits so high.

just by looking at this design , not that its bad, but how is this better than an S class ? because the number is higher ? its the perception of the S class that makes it the best in its class. its built a reputation and it is forever KING.

Mop the floor in 2020! Lol. Will Mercedes be standing still until 2020? Or do you mean the 2020 8 series will mop the floor with the 2016 S class coupe? Whatever, that is a ridiculous statement to make so early.

I love the misleading Autospies headline. How can BMW mop the floor with the S-Class when it currently sells (and has pretty much always sold) less than half the number of 7-Series as Mercedes-Benz does the S-Class? In order for BMW to mop the floor with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class it first needs to stop being outsold by a 2:1 margin.

Until BMW can reduce the 2:1 sales deficit between the S-Class and 7-Series IT will be the one that is being mopped!

Spies, may I please have my Bmw8ter name back so that I may properly comment on how dogshit this car is?

The original 8 was a far contrast from the rest of the BMW line-up at the time. This looks derivative of the rest of the current line-up. It's a giant fkng 7 series coupe, which wasn't even the point of the original.

The original was a bespoke platform meant to appeal to those who wanted the ultimate grand touring car, with options you just weren't going to find anywhere else. A pillar-less B design with a V12 and 6 speed manual transmission.

Alas, BMW will do what they always do, and develop a yawn-inspiring 7/6/5/4/3/2 Series lookalike model 8 series with the same tired turbo engines, but atleast they'll have an upgraded idrive by 2020 that people will still abhor.

I'm of the opinion the 8 series needs to stick with the original design language, Ferarri Maranello style FTW.

Fk you BMW!

In this vehicle category, it seems that an automaker's "true colors" come out & they stick to what they're best at. M-B is better at making the large luxury cars. BMW is best at making the small/mid-sized sport-premium cars.

And since M-B abandoned the stand-alone Maybach ultra-luxury brand, they have the available "latitude" to push their S-class model line up higher & higher into the Bentley/RollsRoyce range of luxury appointments. BMW must still preserve their RollsRoyce brand by drawing some sort of (limit) for the 7-series to go...otherwise it definitely enters the RollsRoyce range.

M-B is free to "up the ante" while Audi, BMW are held down be certain corporate limitations.

"...driveline components, multi-material architecture, electrical system and connectivity solutions closely related to those used by the recently introduced sixth-generation 7 Series." you mean, "a 2 door 7 series" perhaps?

Who really cares about a car coming out in 2020? Might as well say the the 2030 Mercedes will rule the segment!
