If Tesla Built A Pickup Truck, Who Would Buy It?

We all know Americans love SUVs and pickup trucks and have recently eschewed the crop of green vehicles thanks to gasoline as cheap as in the booming days from years ago.

But there’s one automaker that is trying to marry the love for the high-riding vehicles with the idea to save the planet and make a buck in the process – Tesla. They have introduced their much anticipated Model X crossover and now regular digital artist Theophilus Chin has decided to address the Elephant in the room – we have the SUV but lack the pickup truck. Problem solved as you can see – at least in the virtual world. If you think the idea of a fully electric pickup truck is far fetched, we ma kindly remind you in America there are even crazy but utterly cool people that drag race pickups. Imagine what the Model X’s instant torque would do to the bunch of big block V8 engine swaps and Cummins turbodiesels…

Who would buy a Tesla pickup truck? The same "early adopters" who are jettisoning their Model S' for Model X'. Tesla is a "one customer" company - whose customers "upgrade" only for novelty sake, while abandoning the prior model.

Whatever meager "Model S" sales were eeeeking out before the Model X launch, I suspect they will not dwindle to zero as people trade for Model X.

No - Tesla's sales model will prevent me from Buying ANY of their cars or even a truck. While Tesla is saying that their model is open - it is in fact the worst example of monopoly in the game today. They own all the places to get their cars - service (Not auto body) - and parts. Their computers are not open to other mechanics - and they completely control the price of their cars and the price of the trade ins right now. Until other manufacturers actually compete with Tesla - they are a complete monopoly - that has LOTS of negative results for me and so I will go elsewhere.

Spoken like someone who works at an auto dealership =) -- which today is an almost completely unnecessary and irrelevant middleman that does litter besides adding extra costs and customer frustration to the car buying experience.

Certainly I wouldn't buy one that looked like this. I've never cared for these half car/half truck mashups. At least not since the Ranchero and El Camino. If I'm getting a truck that large, I want a bed to match.

If they ever build one, it would be interesting to have a tug-of-war contest between a Tesla Truck versus the likes of Ford, GMC, ...

Double NO for me. I'm not into EVs or trucks. As for Tesla specifically, I'd be surprised if they're still around in a decade.

I am willing to bet Tesla will be around longer than YOU are Steve. Accept the inevitable :)

In fact I already did - 3 years ago - and Tesla is even going stronger today than it did.

Tesla is a swindle. Musk pumps it up and then unloads it sold at a price that is its perceived worth--but not actual worth--and the new owner discovers it's emperor's new clothes time.

Never said I own a Tesla car. Actually explained why I did not buy one even after driving the P90D with Ludicrous mode and being very impressed with its performance.

FYI, being green does not even register for me as I drive a Porsche with under 15mpg average. It's a shame that many on this board who claim to be car enthusiast but who actually are very narrow minded and even short-sighted. Keep closing your eyes and ten years from now you will see a totally different automobile landscape. Nobody says you have to give up your ICE cars - I would not give up mine - but that does not mean you can bash the EV cars regardless of how good they can be.

Not too long ago, people thumbed their noses at the Prius - not for its ugliness but for the new hybrid technology. Now can you tell which car company does not have one in their lineup ?

Accept Tesla for their innovation and their disruptive technology - this take true courage but I think you can do it. The way I see it now, you are simply afraid - just like GM who tries to pull some dirty tricks in Indiana trying to stop Tesla through local regulation rather than taking competition head on.

And for the last time, refrain from calling names and shouting match. I won't lower myself to your level - you need to be a good chap and act like an adult.
