Infiniti Announces "S" Performance Division To Tackle The Germans

Infiniti Announces
Infiniti will introduce new performance branding this spring when its 400-hp V-6 engine reaches showrooms in the Q50 sedan.

Infiniti isn't ready to take on established lines such as BMW's M or Mercedes-Benz's AMG, but executives say the Red Sport 400 series will get the ball rolling.

After debuting with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6-powered Q50, Red Sport eventually will extend to other models, says Keith St. Clair, Infiniti's U.S. director of product strategy and management. "This car will introduce the Red S badging," he said at a media event here.

It's not the lack of performance that makes Infiniti an "also ran". It's their lack of identity, and that weird styling

They've been using the red "S" for years now. So, now they're deciding to call it the Red Sport? And, I'm sorry, but is that really the most effective name for a performance trim for a luxury brand? Just like the "Q" designation, there is nothing distinctive about that name and it likely won't serve its intended purpose for the brand. Only enthusiasts will really understand it. Is this why Mercedes went away from using AMG Sport?
