Fed Grapples On How To Control Pedestrian Traffic After Death Toll Rises 10%

A new study shows the number of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes in 2015 nationally increased 10 percent in the past year — the largest jump since nationwide records have been kept.

In its annual “Spotlight on Highway Safety Report,” the Governors Highway Safety Association compared the number of pedestrian fatalities for the first six months of 2015 (2,368) with the same time period of the previous year (2,232).

After adjusting for anticipated underreporting associated with the preliminary data, researchers anticipate the final 2015 pedestrian fatality total will be approximately 10 percent higher than 2014.

Its the drivers...drive too fast, distracted by phones, believe they always have right of way and impatient. My wife has been handicapped for past ten years and it takes us twice as long to cross a street. Each time we put our lives at risk with cars speeding in front and behind us close enough to touch. I've tried strobe lights throwing coins at them and punching their cars when close enough. The police cannot be bothered in my town...God forbid they have to get out of their car and write a ticket. One cross walk has lights in the pavement and a beeping sound when someone enters a crosswalk and 90% of all drivers ignore these precautions.Stiff fines is the only thing that will change people's driving habits. A $250 fine for entering a cross walk while people are in it will get their attention. You have to make it hurt their pocketbook...anything else will be in effective.

I agree with everything you said, but there are also a far too large a group of pedestrians that either don't look where they are going (buried in their phone or something) or make the assumption that the driver sees them. There's bad ones on both sides, and both sides have to work on being more attentive.

In cities like New York, would really help move traffic and protect pedestrians if there were a pedestrian only walk-green as part of the light cycle-- this could even be for both main street and cross street traffic simultaneously. That way, when the automotive traffic has a green to turn L or R they wouldn't face a never ending stream of pedestrians crossing in their path- yes the pedestrians have the right of way currently, but if not even a single car can turn in the light cycle, what do drivers try to do to get by the pedestrians and what happens to the backed up traffic?
