Cadillac Tries To Level The Playing Field With New XT5 - Does It Even Stand A Chance?

Cadillac Tries To Level The Playing Field With New XT5 - Does It Even Stand A Chance?
There are lots of ways to reinvigorate Cadillac, but it appears utility vehicles will remain a key pillar in the strategy for the foreseeable future.

Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus are killing General Motors’ longtime luxury brand on the car side of the showroom, but there’s a glimmer of hope when SUVs and CUVs are considered. Through February, Cadillac has sold 12,437 Escalades and SRXs, placing the brand above Audi, Infiniti, Land Rover and Volvo. Yes, Cadillac continues to lag behind utes from Acura, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes, but the brand nonetheless is competitive.

The outgoing SRX remained a very popular-selling car despite its age. Its sales INCREASED from 2014 to 2015 despite being 5 years old, selling almost 70k units in the US and 100k units globally.

The new XT5 has a modern look, albeit a bit like a Sorento, and is definitely cleaner than the Lexus RX. The interior is better (in my opinion) than the new RX.

Its price point is perfect for the segment so this could be a real foil to the NX/RX, and the GLC.

I think they priced it a hair too high. I want to move back into an SUV/CUV, but want to stay under $50k with options. I went to their web site and even being careful with my selections it was still $60k. That's BMW/Audi/MB territory, although from the pictures this looks to be a decent competitor. Guess I'll have to see it in person.

If Cadillac has competitors for all the various model 4x4s that Bmw, - or Mercedes have now - I believe that they would be close to them in sales in the USA or above - no one has a competitor for the Escalade. WIth only ONE CUV - Cadillac still manages to outsell a number of its competitors - and when they have a full line of them - it will be no contest.

I saw this up close at the Chicago Auto Show. It is very good looking in the metal. From what I have read elsewhere is is 300 lbs. lighter than the SRX and drives very well. I think it will be a home run for Cadillac. Plus they hinted a stretched version with three rows of seats will follow soon.

I am bothered by the title of the article. "Do they even stand a chance"?!?
100,000 sales globally seems good to me. The new RX is too ugly inside and out.

I'm thinking the 3-row version of this platform is the new GMC Acadia.

I did still hear about a rumored XT6/7 to slot under the Escalade. Both new SUVs look really good for the market they intend to reach.

The XT5 is quite handsome. Price it right. Give it amazing lease offers. Take care of customers. Win!

Chances...slim and none. Heavy discounts and sweetheart leases will move this metal and little else.

The SRX is a fairly easy sale to make. Yes, it is discounted but so is every BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. Yes, it has attractive lease offers but so does every BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. The SRX was more effective in the market place than people think. The stupidly named XT5 is a better vehicle. I'd have named it rather than lettered it.

I haven't seen it in person yet. But from the reviews I read, they dinged the materials quality in all the models lower than Platinum. If Cadillac truly wants to play in the luxury market, the material quality needs to be the same in all models. Audi, BMW and MB have this figured out.

I do not know what sites you are reading, but all that I have read say the interior is outstanding.
trboaccord - The SR5 is an all new platform. It is really very good looking up close and better than most of its competition. Why so angry, did you get turned down for a car loan by GM?

The XT5 is a great stopgap. They now need to pull an XT7 off the next Traverse with a wheelbase extension.

Looks like a BRICK with ridiculous LED stripes on the corner.
