Is Toyota's New Mission To Replace You In The Driver Seat?
Recently, automakers have been split between two sides: sticking to old school driving and forgoing research of autonomous cars, or switching to the dark side and dumping cash into cars that no longer need human pilots. Toyota had originally stated it didn’t want to make a self-driving car because humans would always be needed to handle unanticipated situations. The people who spread the NONSENSE that Auto-Pilot cars will eventually replace humans in the drivers seat - ignore the most basic problem with that scenario - they still need someone to BUY the cars. Without the driving "Experience" - what would compel a person to purchase a car at all? If the government is going to mandate driverless cars - they can all look alike - and will be replaced by buses.

And it will signal the end of the replacement Car Industry as well. No need for higher performance if you cannot actually access it in the vehicle as well. Without the car industry - you may as well point to the end of the economies of the western world - and civilization as we know it.

And I will give in to the driverless car phenomenon when they pry my cold dead hand from the wheel of my car!

Like most things, i.e. touchscreen displays; auto manufacturers will simply include the features as part of vehicle's standard features set. Even if you do no want or will ever engage it, the "auto-pilot" features will be baked into ALL major, i.e. "high-volume", production vehicles in time.

Whether or not governments decide, or constituents vote, to make the operation of these vehicles mandatory, with or without conditions, has yet to be seen.

Toyota's only mission is to sell you a car with the intention to make the experience pleasurable enough that when you go to purchase your next car, Toyota is your first stop.
