Volkswagen Will Probably Fail To Meet US Deadline For Diesel Fixes

Volkswagen Group will probably miss a court deadline today to reach an agreement with U.S. authorities over its rigged diesel engines, possibly exposing the automaker to daily fines and other sanctions.

VW has been in talks for months with the U.S. Justice Department, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) over how to address excess NOx emissions in 580,000 diesel vehicles the company sold to U.S. customers.

The fix is simple. Buy back the cars at original list plus any interest paid. Then send them to the crusher.

The problem with that is that the owners of the cars cannot return the cars in the condition that they were in when they were bought either. And not all of the cars involved even still exist as road going vehicles. AND none of that will pay for the damage to the environment caused by the cars as well. So - the fix is NOT that simple. The fact is - the cars are only worth what they would sell for today with the use and depreciation factored in - assuming they HAD met the emissions standards and still did (And that can be calculated). THe cost to the environment is money that would NOT go to the owners of the cars - that would go to the government. It is NOT as simple as getting all the cars off the road - nor is it as simply as ONLY paying the owners of the cars.

Sorry - the fix is far from simple
