#NYIAS: Two Thumbs UP or Two Thumbs DOWN? The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible
While the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible is not much of a surprise given how long it's taken to go from concept to reality, we're now faced with the prospect of these things hitting showrooms. Looking at this from a 30,000-foot perspective, it's tough to get a read on the success or failure of this sport-utility vehicle convertible.

There's a couple reasons for this.

2016 New York Auto Show

First, the SUV convertible market hasn't been especially strong. While we know that SUVs are hot items, especially in the luxury space, offering in a super niche way is a bit tricky.

Second, Range Rovers are a hot ticket. Whether it's the Evoque or the long wheelbase big daddy, buyers are clamoring to get their hands on them. While it's easy to point to the Nissan Murano Cross Cabriolet's failure, you have to recall that vehicle didn't have the looks or cachet to pull it off. The Land Rover, on the other hand, does.

That said, before going any further, we wanted to take the Spies' temperature: Would YOU rate the all-new Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible two thumbs UP or DOWN?

Style before all else, Baby! If SUV four door coupes sell like hot cakes why not a convertible. I believe M-B, Audi and BMW will follow suit and put my name down on the BMW MX5 convertible list!

A 2-door convertible SUV makes as much sense to me as an amphicar from the 1960s. But as was pointed out to me earlier, the big question is whether it makes enough sense for others to buy them in significant numbers. I don't see it happening.

If people buy it then it's a brilliant product. I do think this has a better chance that the Nissan Moron-o convertible.

There are two groups this will appeal to...Trophy blondes and people over 70. I fall in the latter group. Ease of ingress/egress. good in winter, fun in summer, go anywhere in any weather, good visibility, only two people will be on board and
don't really need 4 doors or large trunk, all car needs rapped into one car rather than two.

I think it will sell well enough but as PUGPROUD notes the appeal is to a specific demographic. One other I would add is those who need an unobstructed field of fire. I think the Wrangler and RR are the only SUVs to offer this.

This is all about snagging the 3rd or 4th car position in the multi-car garages of the wealthy. I could see high school girls in Bev Hills and Calabasas getting these when they turn 16.
