IIHS Tests Shows Same Vehicle Can Be Ranked At Both At Top And Bottom In Headlight Safety
There may be a reason why people have trouble seeing while driving at night, and it’s not their eyesight. A new rating of the headlights of more than 30 midsized car models gave only one model a grade of “good.”

Of the rest, about a third were rated “acceptable,” a third “marginal” and a third “poor.” The difference between the top- and bottom-rated models for a driver’s ability to see down a dark road was substantial, according to the study released Wednesday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an industry-funded organization that evaluates automotive safety.

Good to see this attention given to lighting. Too much form over function from Mercedes. More bad from GM and exceptional from Toyota.

If people dim their instrument cluster and dash lights they will see much better.

So very true. I also love that I can customize the color of my gauge lights.

I can attest to their rating of the Passat, they sucked, because they didn't give full power to them as a feature to prolong the life of the headlights. thats the only issue I had with it. Best headlights i have ever used were in my 2006 Land Rover LR3. the high beams absolutely lit up the road like freaking daylight compared to every other vehicle I have owned. My e30 with the european hella composite headlights had really bright (for halogen) high beams.
