Audi trumps Ferrari and Lamborghini? Is this the most beautiful car in the world?
Audi has incorporated the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8, into a spectacular sports car. Three years after the unveiling of the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, the production version will be making its debut at the Paris Motor Show in the guise of the new Audi R8 mid-engined sports model. It is a fascinating driving machine and the sporty pinnacle of the Audi brand. The mid-mounted 420 bhp V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame aluminium body form the basis for truly outstanding driving dynamics. The Audi R8 will be available to order from 28 September 2006; first deliveries will be made in the first half of 2007.

well, I don't know about the most beautiful car in the world, but it is beautiful alright. Some aspect of the styling needs some time to get used to it, but nonetheless, R8 is still impressive.
I still think the Bugatti Veyron is the most beautiful car in the world. Gorgeous looking car with a mammoth 1000 HP! A truly potent combinations, you just cannot ask for something more..

Beautiful but it will never be a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, or Mercedes SLR. It is stunning though but it doesn't have that supercar look to it. The engine is placed in it's back like its competitors but something about it makes it seem too practical to be a supercar. It's like an SL. Ultra-luxury coupe's. But short on the luxury. I don't know what to say about this.

It looks superb but i'm not sure about it being a supercar or the most beautiful car in the world. I love Audi's, BMW's, and Mercedes but for this exotic supercar would not be the right title IMO.

I'm lost for words. I don't know how to comment on this. When I find the right words i will post again. =)

Once again.. very nice car.. i like it..

It is a great looking car but the design is nowhere near making it the "most beautiful car in the world".

Specifically the side profile seems unbalanced. The passenger compartment seems too tall and out of proportion with a very low nose; the interior is too dark and ordinary for the exterior.

Overall, the exterior design has many individual features that are interesting but the car seems to be decorated rather than designed.

Not a bad effort overall though and well done Audi for having to guts to go through with the concept.

Not the most beautiful, but up there with the best of them. However, i hop the license plate is not going to be placed smack dab on the front grill that way, it detracts from the beauty of the car. Very beautiful, i pray BMW responds to this kind of design with an offering of their own. Don't know about ferrari, but i'll take this over the SLR

Most beautiful car in the world? I don't know about that, and I'm probably one of the biggest Audi fanatics on this website. The design does rank among the best though, that is certainly true.

The rear end looks muscular, the front looks mean and ready to attack on a prowl.

The interior lives up to Audi's impressive standard.

Agent63, your comments are exactly what the R8 was designed to be. The R8 was designed to be an everday supercar.

That's right a practical supercar. The V8 will be pretty damn powerful. 0-62 in 4.0 seconds flat is entirely possible. That is fast, but not in true supercar territory.

Nice looking car - but I don't see how it aligns with Audi's brand 'DNA'. I predict it will struggle and be cancelled just like the VW Phaeton did.

Perhaps it would do well if it was priced like the Cayman/Boxter ($US50K range) but at about $US100+ out the dealership door - not many people will care.

It will be a shame b/c it looks like a nice product. I don't buy the argument that b/c it underprices Ferrari's and Lambo's that people will buy it. I think anybody spending over $80-100 on a vanity sports car purchase are not the price sensitive.

I hope I'm wrong b/c it looks like a nice car.

I don't like how the front headlights meet the grill underneath it, the way the curvy headlights meet a grill that has straight lines. And the side view looks kinda plain also. Ferrari & Lambo still beat it in design! But if it's priced more in the range of Porsche or Corvette then I think it's worth the money.

It`s one thing to have a supercar, but can they hold their value, especially an Audi? Don`t think so, my choice would still be the BMW M6. It might be faster than or equal to the M6 in the 0-60, but after that, it is an impressive picture in the M6 or even M5`s rear view mirror. Nice try Audi, but you still have to learn what BMW has forgotten.

One question, who invented quatro? And it`s not who you think.

The BMW M6 is heavier and not meant to be a true sports car, but rather a heavily sport oriented GT, therefore R8 is superior because it is and was meant to be a true sports car and not a luxury cruiser.

The V10 will definitely make up for the lack of performance of the V8 (if you want to call it that)

Well, Logical, Audi has an everyday car that also serves as a supercar.

There is no other car in the world that you can literally fly around a track with and go over a frozen sheet of ice with if you wanted to.

Audi has earned my respect over time. Most notably for their Audi Quattro. That car has been a basis for design for many companies such as BMW and many others.

I think the R8 will have an audi badge on the back and it is a symbol of just how good Lamborghini has become and the benefit from sharing parts and ideas between two companies such as Lamborghini and Audi.

Logical, you don't have to be jealous. You said already you liked the R8 previously.

BMW doesn't have an answer to the R8 that is for sure.

Larry, nobody says you have to give Audi any respect. There are many people who hate the brand just like there are many people that hate BMW.

Many Auto critics refer the German 3, they are referring to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

If you or logical don't like Audi, it honestly doesn't matter. You are two guys who don't like Audi and are allowed to have your opinion and are free to post what you wish on a message board such as this.

Unfortunately, for you Audi has increased sales steadily and I have a feeling that many people will look at the R8 as it passes by, because it looks similar to a Lamborghini Gallardo as you pointed out Larry.

Logical, I have a tip for you. If you want to hate on Audi, I suggest you do something on a grander scale. You telling people here that Audi sucks and everything else that you say, won't have any effect at all on Audi's sales or their quality, or their cars.

If you want people to hate Audi the way you do I suggest you do something more, something that will let the world know that Audi is inferior to BMW and offer reasons to which there is no feasible response from the Audi lovers.

Say that RWD makes better sports cars than AWD, even though the 911 Turbo has AWD and is one of the greatest sports cars ever.

Say that Volkswagen can't engineer a bike if they had to when they influence the design of some of the world's most sought after brands such as Lamborghini and Bentley along with Bugatti.

Let people know that Bentley sucks and the guy that has $395,000 to burn on an Azure Mulliner is a complete idiot for doing so.

Say that the R8 is inferior because it has plebian roots. The roots specifically by themselves do not make cars bad. I could say a Rolls-Royce is bad because it has links to the "normal" consumer of BMW. No potential buyer of a Rolls-Royce would agree to not purchase a Rolls-Royce because it has links to BMW.

BMW is as every bit a plebian car company as Audi is. The consumers are average in their incomes, in their image and in their view by society.

Therefore based on your knowledge nobody that can buy a Lamborghini should buy one because the Gallardo has HVAC controls straight from an Audi which has a link to Volkswagen.

Why not forget about Bugatti to. A person is an absolute moron if they buy a Veyron that costs over $1 million because the car has links to Volkswagen right????

You don't make any sense. Why do you like Porsche but hate on Audi?

I think Audi needs something performance wise to set you straight and that is on the way with the R8 with a V10.

It's hot, but definitly not the most beautiful car in the world...Aston Martin makes those! The R8's cabin isn't as hot as I was hopping & neither is the exterior (I can't stand the two-tone color.

The V-8 version will cost the same as an M6 and will most likely be similiar in performance. However the M6 is already looking like the bigger bargain because of the simple fact, there's no compromise in luxury for performance.

Granted the R8 & M6 aren't direct competitors, but the M6 is the hotter overall car to own...You got the 500hp V-10 braging rights compared to V-8 420hp bragging rights, cockpit full of gadgets, & classic German design that gives the M6 a classy but muscular look when compared to the spaceship looking R8.

I wouldn't want to drop the money on this car and have to explain to an RS4 or future M3 owner why my $100,000.00 car is only pushing as much power as their's.

Likewise, somebody who has no need for the practicality of four seats and loads of boot space, might see the M6 as a little pointless.

I don't suppose the R8 is going to steal that many sales from the M6 purely because they are not in the same market

I'd argue about the R8's "most succesful race car" 'DNA'. Take for example BMW's 3 series. What you can buy in the showroom is a lot closer to what's won on track - and it's been winning things since the days of the E21 320 turbo's ... between the M3 and the 320, they've won most things over the years. They are alot closer to the production cars than you can buy than this is to the car that won at lemans a few times.

1. The most obvious reason is that Lexus has no design expertise right now. They don't have much experience, and that's why. Their cars don't bring much excitement to the automotive world.

2. No one has seen any real pictures yet! I could just as easily call it the ugliest car in the world! It's onyl been seen covered in black tape and cladding!

If they compare the CLK to the 6series, then perhaps the SL isn't in the same segment as the 6-series, therefore it shouldn't even be talked about. I was surprised though because of the price difference the two had. However, I guess they were judging on its options, power, luxury, and etc.

i must say though, this thing is funky lookin. kinda mean from the front, startin off good, and then you come around and look at the side profile and EEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!! it just looks awful from the side. it may be all its cracked up to be on track but its still gonna look ugly cruisin down pch. the m6 is much better lookin than this thing. wasn't this post about looks??

I see the old friends are at it again. Face it, it will definately match the M6 in acceleration, on the track, the RS4 arleady is quicker than the M6. In the looks department, the Audi wins, no questions asked. And a best in class interior just to finish out the package.

What does the M6 have to do with a car that actually looks great? Why do poseurs and various hangers-on who post here have to bring up their crap organization BMW every time something good in the automotive world comes along? The R8 is a car you could die in and feel like you truly lived. BMW's just make you want to shoot yourself.

to Alextx audi only sells 400 a8 because they cannot meet worldwide demand?? Who told you that?? That is such denial BS, audi only sells 400 a8 becuase it suxs, Mercedes S-class 2500+ a month, 7 series 1400 + a month, believe at the local VW/ audi dealships in south florida, plenty of A8's, in fact they lease them free to movie stars in a desperate marketing attempt.

Rupert, show me the facts, I know this BMW makes more cash than the whole VW group, check the company statement on google. BMW makes 3 times the profit of Audi, 20 billion euro more revenue than Audi per year. if i am wrong post it.

The Audi A8 outsells the 7 series in Germany, where people care about the quality of the car, and not how cool they think they look in it (mostly because of advertising created "coo" The is definately an awesome vehicle. No one has brought up any facts that contradict that.

show me the facts????

What is this a numbers game??

The quality and levels of performance or luxury of a car are not judged by sales.

Sales and quality are inherently two seperate qualities.

I refue to believe the Maserati Quattroporte is less capable than a Mercedes S-class because it sells fewer cars.

German nut ....

Car & driver in December of 2003 did a comparison test between the BMW 745Li, Audi A8L, VW Phaeton, MB S 430, Lexus LS430, & Jaguar XJ8 .... In that comparison test the Audi A8 came in 4th , behind the BMW, Lexus & Jaguar ....Have you driven the M6 yet? If not, then how do you know that it will be faster and out perform it? I have and one of my clients who actually races cars for a living has one. Best perfomrance times I have seen for the M6 are around the 0 - 60 in the 4.0 - 4.2 range and the 1/4 mile coming in around 12.25 - 12.4 second range ....

It amazes me to think that some of you on here could actually buy or have driven any of the cars you are so critical about. I think the R8 is a pretty nice looking car. It is NOT even close to the best Ferrari or Lambo on the market ... How can you even compare this car to a Ferrari F430, 550m or the 599 Scageletti? Anyways, that is just my opinion ... Why does everyone bring up reliability of a supercar? How is ferrari's reliable or porsche for that matter? they arent, but people buy them due to looks, sex appeal, driving experience, status, ego .... reliability is not that high on the list. If that was the case, then how in the world does Range Rover sell anything?

I want the most recent version of the 7-series and A8. Find me ONE article Logical or Larry where the 7-series DEFEATS the Audi A8.

All I want is one.

Until you find me that article, just because company a sells more of a certain car than company b sells of their respective competing model does not make the first company's car any better.

Unlike Larry the Loser, I don't choose my cars based on what everyone else is buying. I'm independant enough to make my own educated decisions. This is exactly why I wouldn't want a cheap, worthless BMW (check out those interiors).

In July, the A8 won yet another German survey that found more people wanted an A8 than a 7 or S-class.

Logical, no way is the M6 more desireable than this. I can think of at least one other heavily sport oriented luxury GT besides the M6. How about the Mercedes CLS55 AMG?? or even the CL55 AMG.

The only thing M6 drivers will be seeing is the tail lights of the R8 as it goes even with the M6 in straight-line acceleration and then slowly pulls away.

If the RS4 can match the M6 around the Nurburgring, the V8 R8 will surely defeat it and the V10 R8 will kick the M6's ass.

Buyers f the R8 are not looking for luxury anything. They are looking for a sports car and that is what they will get. The interior is still, typical Audi perfection, but the emphasis is clearly on sport-oriented rather than luxury.

I find it a great mix of both actually.

Finally a car from Audi that BMW or Mercedes have no price based competition.

Is it all about 0-60 time? What about 60-90 time? I think your R8 is going to be a reasonably good looking non performer, pretty much like the TT 3.2Dsg. If the build quality is anything like the RS4, I am definately not going to buy one. Buying a car is not just about living in the moment, what about backup service, or is that vehicle falling apart 2 years down the line? I think the current BMW and Merc Motorsport vehicles will far outlive any Audi that is due to be launched or available in the future, in memory and in build quality.

In my opinion, Audi still has to learn what BMW has forgotten, it`s not all about the 0-60 time only.

"Finally a car from Audi that BMW or Mercedes have no price based competition"

? People out there who actually buy these cars (rather than 14 year olds that just bithch about everything) buy a car to suit their needs first - then their budget second. When the E46 M3 GTR came out a couple of years ago (at a cost of 250k each), was that automatically the best car because it was the most expensive? And lets not forget it was highly exclusive too... and it was the road version of a car that won the 24h at Nürburgring twice.

You cannot compare this with cars like the M6 and the SL - they are not designed to compete - compare it with cars from lambo or ferrari - as in other 2 seat mid-engined sportscars (not 4 seat front engined/Rear wheel drive GT's)

If BMW ever get their arse in gear and launch the Z10 (or whatever they decide to call it) then that will probably be a better comparison - except when that happens (and the BMW is faster) you BMW haters will probably just say "yeah but BMW copied AUDI R8 - it came out first and the Z10 only won cos its newer" which is exactley the same argument we have with the M3 and RS4, that you audi people don't accept.. (100hp less, smaller engine, more fun and still nearly as fast)

------------------------

Welcome to the year 2006. Twin turbo Supra? I have nothing against tuned up Japanese cars but come on now. You would take a Supra over this car? IT's way out of the Supra's league. Supra was a great car IMO but that's the stone ages compared to this.

GermanNut - I agree with you. Surely this R8 will take out the M6. CLS55, CL55 are also desirable. Isn't there a CL65 and a CLS63 as well? I'm not too sure but great sports oriented GT's.

The R8 will be in the CL65 range I believe in price. Maybe less i'm not sure it's just a guess?. But yes, no doubt it will beat the M6.

Have they said officially which cars are it's competitors? Gallardo? F430? CL65? is that correct? or is it closer to the SL55/65, M6 area?

Also I wouldn't doubt an A8 beating the 7series since it looks less bulky. However it's got a longer sleek design. As for weight isn't the A8 much lighter as well?

----------------------
Off topic (sorry)
----------------------
Honestly, i'm a fan of BMW but their interiors.. i never really liked. I guess it's their choice of materials. I like Mercedes, Lexus, and Audi. I'm more of a Merc fan than any but I must say Audi's fitting is superb and Lexus's ride is nice and quiet.

But compare an A4 to a C-class, A4 anyday. Audi's door's close nice and solid. The audi's doors shut with the sound of a thump not 'clunk'. lol

beautiful? Hardly. An Aston is beautiful, the Alfa 8C is beautiful.

What this is, is a very interesting car. A great looking back and the awesome V10 from the Gallardo doesn't compensate for an unbalanced side profile, a fussy side detailing and a pinched nose.

I'm sure its a hoot to drive though. I've really enjoyed throwing my mates S8 round the bends.
