Who Is Laughing Now? Tesla Secures 115,000 Preorders In Under 24 Hours For New Model 3
Suggesting there may be significant pent-up demand for an affordable electric car with decent range, Tesla Motors revealed the design of its $35,000-and-up Model 3 during a invitation-only event late Thursday.

The unveiling took place after a day of anticipation during which thousands of people waited in line at Tesla showrooms to place $1,000 deposits on the car, sight unseen.

More than 115,000 people made reservations for the Model 3 within the past 24 hours, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at Tesla’s design studio in Hawthorne, Calif., as he revealed the Model 3, with an aerodynamic, genre-bending design somewhere between sedan and hatchback and a huge, tablet-like screen between the front seats.

BobM: Tesla Motors alleges deliveries will start in "late 2017". That's almost 2 years out. They have a well-established track record for late delivery, so realistically, that means about 3 years out.

The 135,000 orders sounds impressive. It's like saying I earned $135,000 from selling magazine subscriptions. Cool! But if those sales are spread out over 4 years worth of production (like $135,000 income spread out over 4 years worth of effort), all of a sudden, it looks less impressive... 33,750 per year.

We can all project our beliefs about Tesla, but only time will tell. I'm watching, and looking forward to learning how this story unfolds.

While it SOUNDS good - remember - last quarter - Tesla LOST over $18,0000 PER car produced. They have NEVER made a profit yet. The idea that this car will come in close to $35,000 is a pipe dream - I would suggest it will have to be closer to $50,000 for them to break even. And also remember that by the time the Model 3 hits the market - Tesla will have already sold close to its 200,000 quota to get the $7500 tax break for buying the EV - so those who buy the model 3 will not get a huge tax break as well.

Then - we do not know IF and how many of these people are past Tesla Buyers or not - and we do not know how many are willing to go another $20,000 (Remember losing the tax break) over the price being mentioned. It may be impressive for that many people to put down a deposit expecting something for the cheap - but the numbers simply do not add up - it will never be as cheap as they say. And then - how many other cars will be on the market by the time Tesla actually delivers the cars.

135,000 x $1000 is $135,000,000, not $135,000. So he got $135M interest free loan.

But you're right, too early to tell. I always felt like Elon is buying time and hope for the best. The cost just don't add up. If anything, that Model 3 we see is NOT a $35,000 configuration, more like $45-50K

They have said numerous times the models they showed were not the "base" models...

135,000 interested buyers is 135,000 interested buyers. That says something about the appeal of the brand and the car. Create your own end of the story, but this is a win for Musk, but the key is he must deliver.

This is 135000 in 24 hours only, keep that in mind. I'm sure there will be more and more deposits on these cars over the next few months.

135,000 people curious to put up $1,000 is still impressive how you look at it. You can say all you want about how many ultimately end up buying or how it's transferable, etc. but any other car companies would love to have this type of response. As far as Tesla is concerned, that's $135mm in zero interest loan.

Then the company suffers a financial crisis and oops we can't refund the money.

Morons. If they'll buy sight unseen trash, I have land to sell them down at the Salton Sea.
