SPIED: Alfa Romeo Steps Up To The Plate With An All-New SUV, The Stelvio — What Does It NEED To SUCCEED?
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is on the move right now really doing all it can to get all-new product on the streets for Alfa Romeo. While we are eagerly awaiting the launch of the all-new Giulia, it seems like the other portfolio company's vehicles are languishing.

Where's an all-new Grand Cherokee or some more Wrangler updates? This is another story for another day though.

What we do have for you are all-new spy shots of the upcoming Alfa Romeo sport-utility vehicle, the Stelvio. If we were betting men, we'd say that this vehicle will do some part sharing with other FCA vehicles.

According to Auto Motor Und Sport, it will leverage the Ferrari-built six-cylinder found in today's Maserati's but that doesn't seem to add up as that motor will be used in the upcoming Levante. Perhaps it will be detuned?

This got us thinking. What does the Alfa Romeo SUV NEED to SUCCEED in today's super competitive SUV market?

Does it need a sweet Ferrari-built six? Does it need to drive better than a Porsche Macan? Does it need that sexy, Italian styling?

What, in your opinion, is going to move units?

I suppose that it would do better IF it was outsourced from Mercedes using their parts - than if FCA made it itself.

There aren't any new Jeeps out because FCA does not have the money for new Platforms - so all you will see is a refresh. Eventually - they will have to come out with a new platform - but so far - everything is based on an old Mercedes Platform that they inherited with the Chrysler 300. So - yes - ALL the "new" vehicles from FCA have to share with others in the mix - but that should not be a surprise anyway.

I am surprised that Matt did not note that the above car looks like a converted new Beatle - and in that form - it has no chance

As far as I'm concerned Sergio aimed wrong with Alfa Romeo and then compounded his error by stating that all Alfa Romeos will be built in Italy. Apparently it is heresy for them to be built elsewhere, yet it's OK to build Jeeps in Italy.

I'd also have inked a BIG platform sharing deal with Mazda to create an Italian "Subaru" i.e. a brand that is more special than mainstream to its owners, but not expensive like a premium.

First of all, they need to change the silly name so it doesn't sound like someone's uncle from the Sopranos.

I like Stelvio. They need to change the girly named Giulia to Giorgio.

just like the Levante, it will have a useless cargo area from the looks of the sloping rear end, that's not an SUV, its a lifted sedan with a slightly larger trunk
