DRIVEN + VIDEO: Is The All-New Maserati Levante Going To Take Down Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes? FIRST Drive HERE!
Porsche is building sport-utility vehicles, BMW is putting M badges on electric vehicles, Mercedes is rumored to be working on a pick-up truck, Ferrari is producing an all-wheel drive hatchback and Maserati just launched its all-new SUV, the Levante. Has the world gone mad?

Well, let's have a look.

The Levante has appeared at the 2016 New York Auto Show and while I was inspecting it top-to-bottom, only one question lingered in my mind: Will the Levante be compelling enough to compete with its class-leading competition?

THINK: There's the Q7, X5, GLE-Class, Macan, Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, RX, etc.

In this very first video review of the all-new Levante, we get an initial impression if the company struck gold or if it's a swing and a miss. That said, give the clip a watch and let us know if you think the Levante has a shot against its very hot competition.

Whatever you think about the way it looks and what it means for the famous Italian brand, the Maserati Levante exists and we all have to deal with it. The key question is whether or not Maserati's first SUV is any good and that's what James Batchelor aims to find out...

Oh, I thought the title said, "Maserati Levante is going to break down....". That just seemed like it made more sense. :-D

Anyway, this will be a good addition to the premium SUV choices, but I don't think it will affect any of the current top sellers.

Especially since it's essentially a "Dodge Magnum" AWD made uglier, given the Maserati face, and the price more than doubled.

Why do people not get that Maseratis, the Giulia, and the Stelvio are all based on permutations of a discontinued Mercedes platform?

Reduce the prices of them all by 30% and they are credible...oh wait...that's a typical beginning mark down at a Maserati dealer.

MDarringer you are mis-informed in this particular area… the Giulia are certainly not recycled/updated Mercedes/Dodge Magnum platforms. From numerous articles in European car magazines to highly documented wikipedia entries it is quite clear the RWD/longitudinal platform being used by these new cars is all new. From wikipedia with a ton of noted documentation - "The Alfa Romeo Giulia is the first model in the brand's relaunch plan, which involves a €5 billion investment for an eight car line-up and a worldwide sales targets of 400,000 by 2018—up from 74,000 in 2013.[12][13] It is underpinned by an all-new, longitudinal-engined, rear-wheel drive platform developed for Alfa Romeo—codenamed "Giorgio".[8] Development of the Giulia, and indeed of the entire "Giorgio" project, has been overseen by Ferrari technical director and secondee, Philippe Krief.[8]"

When will your head come out of your ass Darringer? The Elantra has more in common with the Excel than the Levante has with the Magnum. Seriosly - lol.

@valhallakey You're using wilipedia as a source? That is genius comedy, bro.

The Giorgio platform IS derived from the Ghibli (shortened and narrowed) the Ghibli is a Chrysler 300 with a mildly revised front suspension. The confirmation of that via legitimate sources is everywhere.

The Levante will become the "official car" of Bravo's "Real Housewives" series and "Million Dollar Listing" series.

For the Real Housewives edition - Diamond White Metallic, Cuiuo saddle leather interior and perhaps a gold-tone badging package.

For the Million Dollar Listing edition - carbon black metallic, black leather, 21" rims and sport exhaust.

If Maserati had half a brain, they would be on the phone already with the TV execs to get this product placement going!

Unfortunately, the Maserati execs I am aware of are too busy getting cozy w/ neighbors than doing their job.

Don't expect any moves like Audi or Cadillac, in terms of product placement.

The Maserati sales people here would probably give you a wango tango in the back room to seal the deal given how dead sales are.

Soccer mom's don't enjoy looking like satan driving to the local grocery store. The Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Range Rover dominance will continue without any issues.

The base price automatically makes the Maserati Levante dead on arrival as well. A starting price of $72K is absurd and means most of the Levantes people see will be price in the $75K - $80K range, which is already higher than most of the Q7s, X5s and Range Rover Sport.

Throw in abysmal reliability figures and Maserati has no change against the German establishment.

It's like a boat, the happiest day is when you buy it then when you sell it.....
