Cadillac Planning To Challenge Mercedes CLA With Cruzed Based Rival

Based on internal platform codes, sources are telling us Cadillac is working on a Delta-based Mercedes CLA rival.

General Motors has spent significant time and effort refining the Delta platform – as noted in our Cruze review, this platform is well worthy of premiums above the Cruze’s $17, 495 MSRP.

Based on what sources are sending our way, it looks like General Motors is planning exactly that, a premium vehicle based on the new D2XX platform.

The internal program code D2JL has shown up inside the Renaissance Center – “D” indicating Delta, “2” indicating evolution or generation number, “J” indicating hatch and “L” indicating Cadillac.

Many attempts are made to challenge Mercedes and BMW, or to create a so-called MB-killer or BMW-killer. So far, no takers.

I say instead of talking about it and issuing PR about it, just pull it off, quietly. You won't need to generate any fanfare. If you pull it off, then people will surely notice! Otherwise, it just looks like yet another embarrassing claim of desire or intention to beat a reigning champion, and not being able to do it. And to make matters worse, you've shined the spotlight on that.

Good luck to Cadillac et al.

The problem with Cadillac's otherwise good cars - is that their packaging and interior space are simply below expectations - when they should be ABOVE them.

The problem with DeNYsschen is that he still does not understand that customers don't want a competitor with cars from some middle european country we beat in WWII - they want a CADILLAC. And until he realizes this - everything he does will be GM money down the drain.

AND Mary Barra will only be able to survive so long until the stockholders get tired of hearing the stories - of how great the Cadillacs are - even if they don't sell. She gets paid to SELL CARS and MAKE MONEY. THe sooner she comes to terms with this - the quicker DeNysscehn will be gone - and the better Cadillac can become.

well, I guess the Catera was a full-size car, but still. both Cimarron and Catera were lame attempts.

Cue the Cimarron jokes. How history repeats itself.

Instead, Cadillac should use the current, new, Volt platform and replace the $80,000 XLR hybrid with a $39,000 - $45,000 hybrid - the price-leader in the Cadillac lineup.

You do know that the XLR was a Corvette right?

Mercedes leveraged the Renault Megane for the CLA, so GM leveraging the Cruze for a Cadillac should be OK.

This isn't happening. False rumor.

This is most decidedly happening. It's in the long range product plans communicated to dealers.

Only Cadillac would challange Mercedes with a little Chevrolet based P.O.S. car.

But remember - that Mercedes they are going after is NOT a Mercedes - it is based on a Renault chassis - and the fact is - the car is not worthy too

No way thats definitly not a Renault Chassis, fake and fals rumor. I move every month to Stuttgart as Mercedes Swiss Dealer, and i can confirm that is not the case. Mercedes use some Renault engines (the small 160 to 200 diesel models) thats all. TB
