Volvo Engineer Calls Tesla's Autopilot A Half Baked System
Tesla's Autopilot semi-autonomous technology gives drivers the ability to take their hands off the wheel, while the car effectively drives itself on the highway. At launch, drivers didn't even need to touch the wheel to show that they were still awake and in the driver's seat. It's impressive technology and perhaps the most advanced autonomous tech available in a commercial automobile today. But that doesn't mean it's a good implementation of autonomous technology.

Half baked, if that. Think of it as "cruise control plus" and you get a much better idea of what it is and isn't. At this time, it is NOT comparable to the autonomous vehicles being tested by Google and others.

Half baked compared to what? A Volvo system that won't be out for another two or three years?

It's certainly better than anything out there today.

I doubt the folks at Tesla will be resting on their laurels waiting for other car makers to surpass them.

The only half-baked people are those that don't read or worse don't follow instructions. Autopilot tells the driver EVERY time it is engaged to hold the steering wheel and be prepared to take over at any time. Tesla makes no claim for Level 3 autonomous driving, it labels the Autopilot set of features as convenience.

Just as a data point, I saw a TED talk by the lead Google autonomous car engineer. He says Goog's earliest efforts in automation were a Tesla-like system: a "driver assist" system that required the driver to take over when the system gave up. Goog discovered that it was MORE dangerous that a plain human driver because those silly humans consistently failed to stay alert and 100% on the ball when they were being "assisted" by the system. In other words, they were lulled into a false sense of security, and then surprised when suddenly they needed to take control of their car and they weren't prepared.
