YOU Decide: What's The Number ONE Sleeper Luxury Vehicle On The USED Car Market Today?
As much as we love all-new vehicles here at AutoSpies, once and a while we need to take a look at the older hardware. There's a few reasons why, but if you were to ask me over, say, Agent 001 or 009 it would have to be the driving experience.

You know the saying "They don't build them like they use to," well, you're damn right.

An example of that would be the E46 BMW M3. There's a reason why these vehicles are highly sought after. The steering communicates with the driver and the overall feeling of the vehicle is more raw. These days you hop into an M3 or M4 and it's almost a bit too good. Here's the thing though, it's not a sleeper. The clean examples are fetching top dollar and people are well aware of the E46 M3's greatness.

That said, we wanted to ask you, the tastemakers: What is the number one SLEEPER luxury vehicle on the USED car market today?

It can be a sports car, an SUV or a land yacht, we don't care. We want to know about the hidden gems.

That said, what's it going to be?

Chevrolet SS. Sporty, luxurious, great driving and nobody gives a crap about it.

Oddly yes. I had the pleasure of driving one for three months and I enjoyed it tremendously. It is big, smooth, sufficiently quick, and very well made. Yes an S Class is smoother but not 3X the price smoother. The Kia's build quality is similarly so good that--on a common sense level--paying 3X for an S Class makes no sense. The K900 is also very reliable.

If you own one, be prepared for sneering, snobby idiots who rise every morning, turn to Berlin, and salute Germany in support of their premium sedan fetish. They will think you are the idiot. The irony is that you'll know better.

I cannot wait to see the Genesis G90.

Make up your mind - a BMW 3 series M3 is a premium SMALL SPORTS SEDAN - but it is NOT a luxury car. Ask the 6 footer sitting in the back seat behind another 6 foot tall driver if it is a luxury car. A Luxury car has a different driving experience from a SPORTS car - something YOU SHOULD not argue.

AN SUV is NOT a car at all - regardless of whether they are a crossover -or based on a truck. And none of them offer a comparable Luxury experience to real CARs.

My vote for a sleeper Luxury car would be the last generation Mercedes S class - not the current one. WHile they have a few less electronic gizmos - they have a supreme Luxurious Ride and Handling - offer plenty of power for the job - and have serious room inside for the passengers. AND because the current S-class is so good - the old one has been less desirable and there are plenty of good examples on the market at really low prices.

A second choice could be te Jaguar XJ - which also has the room - the Luxurious ride - and decent handling - and for some reason does not hold its value in the USA as it does in Europe - so it can be had for very advantageous prices. You might also include the last generation 7 series - but it does not have the room of an S class.

And if you want cheap - then you should try a Buick LaCrosse - or Cadillac XTS - both of which easily beat the current Lincoln MKS - and are cheap on the used market. OF course - you can also get a high end Chevy Impala(Not an entry level one) - even new - they are basically good.

AND if you want a SPORTS SEDAN - don't buy a Luxury car - they are not the same thing!

You are really, really overthinking this.

Note I even said luxury vehicle? That includes cars, trucks, SUVs, whatever.

And luxury is an umbrella category, which is composed of all sorts of products, some of which are sports cars and some are whatever else. It doesn't matter!

You're like one of those people that wants to categorize music by all these sub sub genres. Seriously, give it a rest!

Sorry - but there is still a difference between a small SPORTS car and a Luxury Vehicle. Sports cars are their own category - they are NOT luxury vehicles.

Premium vehicle is the Umbrella category - BUT luxury vehicle - implies LUXURY - not sport. I am an accomplished musician - and a member of the musicians unions as well - and I do know the difference between genres of music - thank you. That is it is part of MY business to know that.(And that is a side profession for me)

I would normally expect that you should know the difference between a sports car and a Luxury vehicle because that is supposedly YOUR business. - you would drive each differently from the other. If you cannot tell the difference between a sports car and a Luxury car - maybe you are in the wrong profession.

M3 F80 is now as large as E39 5 series.

No problem in back for a six footer behind a 6 footer in front.

The "#1" aspect is really a pointless modifier because the context was not specified.

If you do not care about reliability or cost of ownership, you can get a used Jaguar for cheap. Their depreciation rate is cataclysmic and that allows you to have a stylish car for the price of a loaded Camry, but...

You could also go get a Maserati Ghibli that the dealer "bought" so Maserati could cook their sales numbers that they now must sell as used. What's not to love? Chrysler 300 platform, Chrysler V6 pretending to be Italian, an Italianesque interior for Chrysler 300 prices after the precipitous markdown. The Ghibli--because it's a Chrysler 300--is not too shabby for reliability.

I think you are on to something there MDarringer, however the question is USED car and the Ghibli is a bit new to have much on the used care market. However the Maserati Quattroporte is quite luxurious and although not the most reliable car in the world they are certainly not 1980/1990s unreliable either. Most newer cars are pretty darn reliable compared to even 10-15 years ago so I feel it is not as great a factor as it once was. I knew a couple people in Europe that had Quattroportes for quite a few years and many klicks with no major issues. Although I have no direct/indirect experience with it, the Grantourismo especially in S guise seems like quite a luxurious and fun 2 door that is also under-rated/overlooked IMHO.

@valhallakey There are Ghiblis and Qportes that dealers have "bought" from stock as customer courtesy cars that have to be sold as used. That was to cook numbers on sales. My father in law had the previous Qporte--the cool one--and he replaced it with a Ghibli. Because I admired his Qporte, he gave it to me and I promptly found a buyer. It was a great car and it was reliable, but money in the bank account is more satisfying.
