Next Generation Jeep Wrangler To Pack 300HP Turbo 4 Cylinder

It’s not the engine you’d want for rock crawling, but it’s just the ticket to please commuters and the Environmental Protection Agency.

A source tells Automotive News that a high-output 2.0-liter four-cylinder under development by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will first appear as an option on the next-generation Jeep Wrangler.

The aluminum block engine is code-named Hurricane (a nod to Jeep’s engine heritage), and is said to make in the neighborhood of 300 horsepower, with torque figures being anyone’s guess.

Anyone who goes off road will tell you that is a DUMB engine for the Wrangler.

With todays variable geometry turbos and improved software you can tune anything for anything. A T4 will be light, economical, quiet, powerful, and cable of very linear throttle response. Not seeing the downside...

You clearly (1) know nothing about the demands of off roading and (2) have no real world experience with turbos.

Let's assume your "no downside" world of turbo engines having a linear response, in rock crawling the turbo would likely be very non-linear and would tend to produce a lot more heat than a naturally aspirated engine. Why? The vehicle would not be getting enough air through the intercooler for optimum performance.

The downside is that it is a FIAT engine

Its a about time. Wranglers have horrendous mileage and for those who dont' rock climb but still like the Wrangler, finally get an option to trade torque for mpg.
