High Hopes? Alfa Romeo Targeting The Porsche Macan With New Stelvio Crossover

A development version of the upcoming Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been photographed testing at the Nürburgring, ahead of the car's anticipated launch early next year.

This is the second time we've seen the car running in its own bodywork; on previous occasions in Italy, all development mules have been wearing a chopped-about Fiat 500L body.

Deja vous. That front end looks familiar. Oh yeah. The 1958 Edsel is resurrected. If you don't know what one looks like Google " 1958 Edsel" .

Will this mongrel (300-->Ghibli-->Giulia-->Giulia AWD) also not have passable crash safety like the Guilia?

Well if the Stelvio is any where close to the rave reviews of the Giulia it will give the Macan a run for it's money. The Giulia is currently getting rave reviews in the European press. They are rating it a better car to drive then the M3.

They similarly raved about the Jaguar XE, so is the XE now eclipsed by the Giulia?

Magazines gush about new cars because it's about advertising not accuracy of reporting.

it eludes me how anyone can see the ugly, derivative turd the Giulia is and (1) find it gorgeous and (2) believe it is better than the Germans.

"Crap" is Alfa Romeo's middle name.

Well Darringer you are as always honest and entitled to your opinion. Bare in mind that until you see a car in the flesh it would be wise to reserve final judgment. Clearly Alfa's have been "crap" in the past so I can understand your skepticism. I've owned 3 from the 80's so I can attest to this. However my love for their character effectively numbed my wallet. So I did not feel the full outflow of cash I ended up having to lavish on repairs. However even modern Alfa's such as the Mito and Giulietta are in a different dimension reliability wise then the 80's cars. The 4C uses an engine that is related to the current 1.4 Multiar in the Fiat Abarth. In my ownership that engine was completely bulletproof. With the amount of money Marchionne has thrown at development(5 billion), we can only hope that Alfa finally gets it right this time. At least the V6 engine is not related to the Maserati block(AKA Chrysler Pentastar with reworked internals). It is in fact related to the V8 from the Ferrari 488 with 2 cylinders lopped off.
