SPIED: This Is Your FIRST Look At The All-New Audi A8 — Is The Marc Lichte Era BRIGHT or DIM?
OK. So, with a couple automakers we've been seeing — for years — all-new models debut generation over generation sticking to the same formula. In theory this isn't a huge problem; however, the situation has gotten a bit dire for two automakers. Of course this is merely in our opinion.

Cadillac's Art & Science design language is dead as a doornail. And, they're not alone as Audi is running on fumes. If you look at the cars that are selling out of inventory, it's because they have presence, are boldly designed and are pushing the boundaries.

We've been told, repeatedly, that Audi's all-new head honcho of design, Marc Lichte, would help the four rings foster an era of jaw-dropping design. The first car to show this off is the next-gen A8 and I confirmed this with executives at the A4 launch in San Diego.

Now we're finally getting our first look.

As expected, the car is covered head-to-toe in camouflage but if you examine the photos, it's clear to see what lies beneath.

Examining the exterior, especially the facade, it's easy to see similarities between this design and the Prologue concept. There's just one problem. It seems to fall flat. Largely, the vehicle looks too similar to the current-gen A8 and the roofline is a rounded crescent that reminds me of the C5 and C6 A6.

These are the first shots, so, perhaps my assessment is premature. But, typically, when photos show THIS much, we expect it to have a bit of sizzle. That said, we have to pitch it to our Spies, what do YOU make of the next-gen Audi A8?

Is the Marc Lichte era of design at Audi BRIGHT or DIM?

Audi can use all sorts of tricks to throw people off at this stage including adding the new grille to the old A8 body.

Wait until Audi reveals the final product before jumping to conclusions.

Amen to that!

I'd applaud Lichte if he created a new language that had only the 4 rings in common with the old one.

This is a bigger mouth on the same old German Buick.

Welp, so much for the great new hope in Lichte. This looks more VW-like than ever before. Actually, the roofline is very reminiscent of the 7th generation Impala (ironic, considering the A6 looks just like the old Ford 500). The Prologue-ian elements add nothing to this design. And don't go all, "it's behind camo, how can you tell". Well, if your eyes can't tell the design based on what you see here, then eyes need to be checked. The only thing that will save this are some more of those fancy Audi LEDs.

Looks promising! However, they need to get the Long Wheel Base correctly proportioned. The current A8 LWB looks like a kindergartener designed it - awkward, ill-proportioned, and ugly. Other LWB's - S550, 750, XJ8 look graceful.

The A8 LWB (and for that matter than Panamera LWB) looks like sh--.

In fact, the only good looking cars in the VW group stable are the GTI, the 911, the Cayenne/Macan, Lambo's, the Bentley Cont GT, and the Mulsanne. The Audi A5, Q5, A4, R8 are pretty good as well.

The current A8 is just strange looking - anything would be an improvement.

Really looking forward to this car but must admit this prototype is very disappointing. Looks almost the same as the current model but with the Q7's ugly grill attached to it. Hope this is not representative of the finished model.

While I have bombarding Audi styling for several years now - I would question whether this car is a Lichte styled car. It is clearly too derivative of the old one to be a clean sheet start.

Yet that is precisely how they are updating everything. If this keeps up this will be known as Marc Lichme styling.

I can't believe you people are falling for Audi's trick. No one who had paid any attention to Audi's stated design goals would believe this design is representative of the new A8.

Audi is intentionally trying to fool people and they appear to be doing a very good job at it.

Hmmmm. I'll wait til the camo is removed before I reply to that comment...
