Radical Departure: 2018 Lexus Flagship LS To Be Powered By A Turbo 4 Cylinder?

Just about 27 years ago, the Lexus brand established itself by bringing the LS full-size luxury sedan to market. No less than 2,300 technicians, 1,400 engineers, 200 support workers, and 60 designers were involved in the project. Now at its fourth incarnation, the LS prepares for a change of heart.

It’s no secret that the fifth-generation Lexus LS will be a dramatic departure from the current model, one that will see the flagship luxobarge borrow some styling cues from the LF-FC Concept. Other than the LF-FC design study and this rendering, nothing else was known about the upcoming LS. Until now.

It's possible that we'll be seeing more of this in the not too distant future -- smaller engines with fewer cylinders delivering more power and higher fuel economy, all to meet ever-evolving fuel economy and emissions legislation for internal combustion engines (ICE).

Like it or not, this seems like a logical next step in the evolution of ICE. This is also a bitter pill to swallow when pump prices are as low as they are today, and people are lulled into a mindset of cheap, abundant gasoline (and diesel), and damn the consequences of burning it.

Or, you know, there could be another motor in development that hasn't been revealed yet, as another possibility, maybe (most likely with more cylinders). It's just as likely. The only reference in the article to the current 2.0L Turbo 4 is that there are other models in the lineup that use it. It's not like they'll develop ANOTHER Turbo 4, that's not their style. I can always tell Agent009's articles by the clickbait title and 9/10 times I'm right. Congrats 009, you got me. These kinds of headlines that are strategically disconnected from the actual content of the linked story are kind of childish. Instead, maybe you can title the "article" (link to the real story) more accurately, then state your assumption as the first comment? Food for thought.

If this is true, it's BETTER NOT be the 2.0T use in the NX200t or IS200t. Anyway you slice it, it's terrible and I hope ALL manufactures don't go this route with their flagships!

To many people this makes little difference. Most people don't even know they have front wheel drive. However to an enthusiast and to a knowledgeable buyer of premium brands a four cylinder will never do.
Do you really want your car buddies to say "You spent $100K for that and got a four cylinder engine. What were you thinking?" Nothing beats a V8 in a high end luxury car for torque, power and prestige. Entry model maybe but not top of the line luxury car.

An electric motor clearly argues against the "Nothing beats a V8 in a high end luxury car for torque, power and prestige. Entry model maybe but not top of the line luxury car." line. The Tesla Model S is clearly a high-end luxury car with torque, power, and prestige.

I can EASILY see a 2.0T in the LS with electric assist. That IS 100% what Lexus would do.

That's refreshing! I finally see MD acknowledging the Model S in a positive note. There is hope for humanity :)

When choosing a premium or luxury car, I would not settle for anything less than a V8 - or a powerful EV if there comes a time. I would not drive a 4 cylinder car not matter how fast it can go - it just feels wrong on many levels.

@HenryN you're such an idiot. I've never NOT said the Tesla S is a high-end luxury car with torque, power, and prestige. I have been adamant that FOR THE PRICE much better choices exist for quality, reliability, and most likely durability. That's always been my position.

Tesla S or A7? A7!
Tesla S or CLS? CLS!
Tesla S or Panamera?
Tesla S or 6 Series GC? GC!
Tesla S or Dodge Dart? Dart

Is that how it works? Are we in junior high? And you call that a defense? You do realize that this is just a forum where nothing is real and nothing to get hung about...strawberry fields forever dude. I find the bashing of me quite amusing because of what it says of people here and their place on Maslow's hierarchy. Jung would have a field day.
It's all good, yo.

Are you in Jung still at it in the closet? Both of you are a few base pairs short of a double helix.

The only thing I'm interested in Lexus developing for their new wider-mouth models is a Cloaking Device so that people outside the car won't have to look at it. That would be brilliant and much appreciated!
