CAR WARS! Range Rover SVAutobiography vs. Bentley Bentayga — WHO Does It Better?

CAR WARS! Range Rover SVAutobiography vs. Bentley Bentayga — WHO Does It Better?
Right now we're dealing with a sport-utility vehicle frenzy. From an outpouring of compact SUVs to the all-new, latest über luxury SUVs we know one thing is true:

People want them bigger and people want all the latest equipment in them.

And after you've been in something like a supercharged Land Rover Range Rover long wheelbase model, it's easy to see why. They're exceedingly comfortable, boast excellent ride quality and can hit 60 mph without breaking a sweat. Oh, and you can go off-road or toss the kid's junk in the back without any hesitation.

But there's a new sheriff in town. That would be the all-new Bentley Bentayga. As Volkswagen's been building SUVs that can go off-road, do the luxury thing and have impressive, sports cars-like performance it certainly puts has the chance to put the big daddy Range Rover in its place.

But can it? See the conclusion from Autocar's experience, below.

...Does the Bentayga’s do-everything status compromise it? Undoubtedly. Remove any one of the three things it’s supposed to be – luxurious, sporting and versatile cross-country – and it’d be able to do the remaining two even better. And with a V8, it might sound nicer (it’s unremarkable as it stands) and feel more agile.

But although this might not be the perfect Bentayga, it does enough to see off what is not the perfect Range Rover. Inside, the SVAutobiography feels too Accessorize diamante to be comfortable at £150k, whereas the Bentayga is entirely happy where it is. The Range Rover is a better car at a far more reasonable price. The Bentley is the only – and by definition, best – luxury 4x4. And it’d take an impressive car to beat it...

Let's see Range Rover or a Bentley Touareg...I'd go with the Rangie.

While I haven't driven the Bentayga, your thought sums it up for me: Q7 vs. Range.

Make mine a LWB Range with the awful electronics.

They lost me with the name. Saying "Bentley Bentayga" is clunky sounding. I find the styling of the Bentayga to be ungainly like a fat, middle-aged woman thinking she's hot in yoga pants. Thankfully the choice between these two is immaterial in my life because I cannot afford either of them.

The Range Rover is stately and impressive. However the Bentley oozes class, cash, status and panache. While standing at a cocktail party with the richest guy in town, your father-in-law, the local bank president and biggest wannabe you blow them away when your answer to "What do you drive?" is "A Bentley Bentayga." They haven't a clue what a Bentayga is but they know it must be special if its a Bentley. A Range Rover is just an upscale truck for a soccer mom to most people but a Bentley is something to be desired and admired. Just is...

Agree to disagree. To me it's too Kardashian...too "high dollar low rent" and as for what it oozes, would ask Scott Disick who's probably cleared up his infection by now. :)

The Bentayga is very Kardashian and will be driven by people who will lease it because they can't afford to buy it.

It screams "car-jack" me!

I'm sure the Bentayga is a nice vehicle, but it faces an impossible, uphill, task at that price point. They should have de-contented it and made it Bentley's "entry level" at around $150,000 to start, $200,000 all in, less a little "cash on the hood".

I predict the Bentayga will sell in miniscule volumes - as nice as it is, $250,000 out the door is the ionosphere as far as the car market.

Besides, line it up next to a Q7 and you will see the "hard points" are exactly the same.

VW salesman: "This is the Touareg."

Porsche salesman: "As a matter of fact, let me clear up a misconception. The Cayenne has nothing in common with the Touareg"

Audi salesman: "You do know the Cayenne is just a VW Touareg with slightly different styling and that Porsche borrowed our Q7 platform to make the Cayenne."

Bentley salesman: "As a matter of fact, let me clear up a misconception. The Bentayga has nothing in common with the Q7"
