SPIED: All-New Spy Shots Of The 2017 MY Mercedes-Benz S-Class — What Does It NEED To Continue Running The Luxury Show?
Since the latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class launched it has dominated the large luxury sedan space. It is the undisputed champ when it comes to sales. While I think the all-new BMW 7-Series is a better driving product, the three-pointed star was out for about two years before the Bavarians could retort.

And my, my it looks like no one can stop the S' momentum.

As the challengers start to launch their respective attacks, it looks like Mercedes has started the development of its refreshed S-Class. While no specific details are really known at this point, speculation has some pretty good hunches.

Exterior modifications are expected to be minimal. Expect new wheels, an all-new front clip, updated exhaust finishers and likely updated headlights and taillights. No big deal there.

On the inside, however, is where the refreshed S is expected to get a bit of love. That would include an updated instrument panel and infotainment display as well as other little touches to up the technology ante. As BMW offered a slew of all-new tech in its 7, we're sure that Mercedes will not take it sitting down.

Although the current offerings powerplants are excellent, we expect for them to receive minor power increases across the board with an uptick in fuel efficiency. Can you say nine-speed automatic?

...Exterior changes for the updated S-Class will be minor, and these spy shots show some light camouflaging around the new front and rear bumpers, while earlier prototypes showing new LED headlight cluster designs.

More complex changes are expected for the interior. The S-Class's digital instrument cluster was one of its hallmark features when the car was launched, but rivals have been quick to adopt the technology in their premium models...

Does the S-class have any real competition? The S pretty well defines the segment. All they need to do is not mess up horribly, and they're good to go for another year. I think that's pretty much a sure bet.

What do they need to do? Show up.

Agreed - the S-class has defined the segment because it has successfully fulfilled what the people who actually buy the cars want.. While Agent 00R says that the Bmw 7 series drives better - he is missing the point. The Mercedes drives the way the BUYERS want it to drive - and if they want a sports car - they can buy an AMG version. BUYERS for this class car want a LUXURY car - not a BMW. BMW is making the same mistake Cadillac makes - by not listening to the buyers (Not just BMW buyers).

Sounds like MB did everything the BUYER wanted to be done in the S-Class. However, aren't S-Class owners a little pissed that they and forked over $100,000+ for their car, and—from the side and rear—the $38,000 C-Class is a dead ringer for it, only smaller? Without a side-by-side comparison, I have to see the badging to tell the difference for sure.

Actually - that same thing can be said for BMW and ESPECIALLY Audi. ANd in the past - the S-class had more to differentiate it from the e class - and c class. However - people who by the S class buy it for the interior room - something the c-class cannot claim to be close to.

Nip/tuck on the styling. Freshen the interior. Add a PHEV version.

I've always found the dashboards on the S to be a tad garish. I don't like the 7 or the A8 either but perhaps a bit less "garishness" on the trim pieces. I think the car looks lean and sleek but its not a beautiful car and nothing like the "regal" looks of the W126 or earlier, the 280SE; though better than the previous 3 incarnations.

Considering the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has outsold all its competitors including the BMW 7-Series for four decades, I'd say Mercedes-Benz is well aware what it takes to run the luxury show.
