Rolls Royce Says Upcoming SUV Will Be A Capable Off Road Vehicle
Bentley and Rolls-Royce are fierce competitors in the ultra-luxury car segment, but one thing the former has beaten the latter at is in the race to drop an SUV. The Bentayga has been stealing headlines for some time now. Meanwhile Rolls is still working on its SUV, codenamed Project Cullinan. The project is shrouded in secrecy, but BMW design chief Adrian van Hooydonk lifted the veil ever so slightly at the recent Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este during a chat with Top Gear (magazine).

I am skeptical how big the global market is for a $250,000 to $450,000 5-seater SUV.

The "sedan" market at $250,000 to $450,000 is miniscule (Mulsanne, Ghost, and Phantom) so I suspect that the SUV market will either cannibalize that market or else be redundant to that market.

There is no pricing power in the sedan/SUV market (unlike that for 200+MPH sports cars (i.e. Veyron, Murcielago, etc - where deals trade at $500,000 to $2,000,000) - which are unique and beautiful and bespoke.

SUV's and Sedans at any price point scream "mass-produced" and that is the inherent problem with a $250K to $450K SUV. It will always be based off of some plebian car. Put a Bentayga and Q7 side by side - they are clearly the same car.

You do know Rolls Royce & Bentley shared platforms and parts before they were bought by BMW and VW? Currently RR uses BMW 7series platform and parts, likewise Bentley and VW/Audi/Porsche. RR & Bentley would be dead today if they hadn't been bought up. Look at Saab, Volvo, Jaguar, & Land Rover..if Ford and GM hadn't intervened, they'd be gone too, hell Saab is I think.. There's a market for the cars, but these companies back in the 90's didn't have to money to continue operating independently, and still don't, but they have their name and that's Gold..

Actually - I believe that the market for the Bentayga and Cullinan will be Separate from the market for the sedans from Rolls and Bentley. One must remember that even in statistics from Rolls Royce - a Phantom is generally one of at least three cars owned by their buyers - and is likely to be used for special occasions - the buyers often have an everyday driver too. So - I can see a Rolls owner buying a Cullinan for weekend excursions to the National Park. For a similar situation - remember the rich oil people from some areas of the USA having bespoke Cadillacs in their garage next to their Pick ups. When money is really no object (Trump claims he had $557 million in income last year - not net worth) - A $400,000 costs less to them - than a Honda Civic costs to a $50,000 a year worker. ANd yes - also remember that these are not Mass market production - so it really depends on actual ability to produce lots of bespoke vehicles- the numbers will necessarily be low compared to Audi/Bmw/Mercedes which are produced on a partially robotic assembly line.
