Is The Ever Such A Thing As Too Much Horsepower? Audi Toys With 300HP SQ2 Crossover

The new Audi Q2 doesn’t arrive in showrooms until the end of the year, but Audi is already planning to up the excitement level on 2016’s must-have SUV.

An SQ2 model is likely to use the four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo from the Audi S3 – with 296bhp and quattro four-wheel drive. It would slot into the maker’s growing SQ range of hot SUVs alongside the SQ5 and new SQ7.

“It is something we’re looking at,” admitted Stephan Knirsch, Audi’s Board member for Technical Development. “It would be relatively easy to do with MQB. The Q2 shares a lot with the A3, but we have to see what appetite there is for the more expensive Q2 models first.”

This would be essentially a 300hp, AWD hatchback. How would this be any more alarming than a Subaru WRX?

Yes - there is a point at which horsepower exceeds the vehicles ability to use and control it. That would likely only happen on a race track or test conditions.

Virtually ALL ready-made cars already have more than enough horsepower to perform as needed on Public Roads. There was a time when a 0-60 time of under 10 seconds was considered fast (First VW GTI). Today - school buses can beat that time - and need to - because they will get run off the road by other vehicles otherwise. Eventually - the technology that allows autonomous cars - will also allow the government to control YOUR car to prevent speeding - poor driving - tailgating - and enjoyment of that horsepower you will no longer be able to use.

This thing is seriously unattractive.
