Tesla Brings Back Budget Model S To Bridge The Gap Between Model 3
Tesla says it has started selling a cheaper version of its Model S car, in an attempt to make the electric car more affordable for more people.

The new version, called the Model S 60, starts at $66,000. An all-wheel drive version of the Model S 60 will start at $71,000. Both cost less that the current Model S 90, which starts at $89,500

Wow.. How are the haters gonna attack Tesla now? The new 60kW model is CHEAPER than the old 60kW version by about $4000 as the cost of producing batteries has dropped. Tesla has just introduced the novel concept of cars actually GOING DOWN in price over time ...the clock is ticking on all the old farts still knee-deep in IC engines. Benz, Audi, BMW, you dropped the ball years ago and are STILL desperately trying to play catch-up.

Actually I find the number of non-gas power plant haters on here to be surprising. Hybrid, diesel, electric are all attacked. Honestly at the end of the day, I really don't care how the power is created (if could be a Flux capacitor for all I care), I want to know how the power feels, reacts and ultimately makes the car go.

@jeffy210 - I'm equally puzzled as you on the diehards out there. Who cares how the power is created? One would think in this land of capitalism that is trending towards less reliance on middleman, people would want Tesla to survive/succeed as it gives us another option in the marketplace.

never drove a tesla, but ive heard great things from people that have one. I'm definitely not against getting an electric car in the future if it looks good or better than the tesla.
i didnt want to like a hybrid/ electric car but after driving the bmw i8, it has made me a believer that this is definitely the future and we should all embrace the benefits of electric cars. the speed/ power is there, once they get nice designs out there , i cant see why people wouldnt love them.
for those who arent crazy about the lack of sound, i agree on that point, but again, the bow i8 has it piped into the speakers and its just amazing, im sure in the future itll only get better.

Four positive comments in a row on a Tesla article--that must be some sort of record on Autospies. The new model will help bridge the gap between the Model S and the Model 3. I'm sure the 3 will be great, but the S will still be Tesla's flagship car and have better performance + several features the 3 won't (dual screens, automatic door handles, electric hatch, etc.). $66K before tax incentives is a killer price for the S, especially one that is software upgradeable to 75kwh and/or autopilot. It will be interesting to see if this will entice people waiting for the 3 to pull the trigger on an S instead.

This launch is Tesla's equivalent of "cash on the hood" to juice sales.

Tesla is in kind of a tough spot - with the Model X quality/usability problems and the increasingly dated nature of the Model S - Tesla is facing a lot of sand in its gears.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock! I give Tesla 18 months before its sold to one of the majors and then reconstituted ala Hummer (i.e., the corporate purchaser starts slapping the Tesla badge on their warmed over models.)
