GMC Launches Rear Seat Reminder To Warn Parents To Remove Children From Car
As the temperatures rise outside, children, pets and other personal items can be mistakenly left in a vehicle with blistering heat.

GMC is looking to change that.

Dubbed the “Rear Seat Reminder,” the feature was designed to remind drivers to check their back seat as they exit their Acadia.

Rear Seat Reminder is standard on the redesigned 2017 Acadia. It is not available on the 2017 Acadia Limited, which is the older version.

General Motors said it intends to roll out the technology in other vehicles, but didn't offer specific nameplates.

What's next? Road rage reminder? "Don't be a dick! You're following too closely."

Maybe it's just me, but I think we'd all be served better with a huge dose of mindfulness and self-accountability. Perhaps I'm being too idealistic.

OK, kudos to GMC for creating this tech. But, seriously? Cars are now teaching people how to be good, responsible parents? Honestly, I don't want any children harmed. But anyone who even has the potential to leave their own children in the backseat of a car deserves not to dwell in the midst of society.

If you're stupid enough to not pay attention to your kids or pets in the back how are you going to notice the display message? Especially if it's always there as a general warning and not associated with a chime/sound? Seriously, not that people should need such a thing, but if you're going to engineer it, why not have the car monitor with an occupancy sensor in each seating position and automatically alarm? open windows? send text messages? when sensor is tripped?

In fairness, I'm not sure you read the article. It isn't "always" on as a warning. It's activated based on specific timing of the rear doors opening/closing in conjunction to the car starting.

As a parent of soon to be 5 boys, how in hell can any parent be unaware of his/her children? My men are my priority and their safety is paramount. If a parent forgets a kid in a car, they need to be executed.
