BMW Brand's May 2016 Global Sales Rise 5.6% But Falls Further Behind Mercedes-Benz As YTD Growth Fails to Match Rivals

Sales of BMW brand vehicles totalled 168,129 in May, an increase of 5.6% on the same month last year. In the year-to-date, sales are up 5.0% with a total of 797,457 vehicles delivered to customers around the world. May saw strong growth in the sales of many BMW models such as the BMW 2 Series (16,823 / +47.6%), the BMW X1 (13,884 / +47.8%), the BMW X4 (4,947 / +13.0%) and the BMW 7 Series (4,539 / +32.4%).

I hope you'll forgive me if I don't participate in the perceived "We're Number One" perceived rivalry between the luxury brands. Mercedes make great luxury cars, regardless how many units BMW or the others sell. BMW makes great sport sedans, and it doesn't matter how many units the other guys move. And as a long time (ex)BMW owner of several vehicles, I can truly say my first Audi is comparable, as enjoyable (and a little better value than my previous BMWs), and it really doesn't matter if they brag about ever-increasing sales, whether they're Number 3, Number 2, or ever Number 1 someday.

It just doesn't matter to me! Get the car you love and can afford. Love what you get, and enjoy! Leave the numbers up to the bean-counters and PR monkeys to fret over.

BMW is in for a rough ride the remaining part of this year. While Mercedes just shipped the C-coupe to dealerships this past month and the E-class in short time, BMW has no new product to introduce.

I speculate they'll just do fine. Check in at year-end and review their bottom line. BMW has a history for consistently being profitable, regardless of their circumstances.
