The Future Of Mercedes-Benz May Start With The Letter "E" — Agent 001 Goes To Silicon Valley And Drives The All-New E-Class
This year, one of the most critical luxury vehicle debuts will be the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Not only is it very clear that the Spies here are VERY interested in this product, but also that the automotive industry is following it closely.
Not only is this car expected to ship in volume, it also represents much more to the three-pointed star.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
That's because it is setting an all-new benchmark in the automotive space. Tonight I spoke with Agent 001 who is in Silicon Valley and spent the past two days driving the all-new E. He's told me that there are some things in the all-new E that just simply have not been done before.
In addition, he added that the level of innovation in the all-new E-Class is truly groundbreaking and that the E will set the bar for the industry. Given what I know about the all-new Mercedes, I have to say that 001 is on the money here.
But before we start going through the details slide-by-slide, I want to show you the eye candy first. That said, 001's snaps from the past couple of days are below.
Make sure to check back to AutoSpies.com tomorrow as I showcase the super cool details about the all-new E!

Very handsome C-Class ... er S-Class ... or whatever.

While I dislike that Mercedes has gone to the one-sausage-different-lengths approach to styling, the E Class is quite attractive.
I cannot wait to drive one. It's not a vehicle that will grace my driveway simply because it is not practical and the wife isn't into sedans.
I presume--like the C and S Classes--this is another home run for Mercedes.

Looks good. However, I'm a bit "disappointed", if you will, in the similarity with the S and C. The C had always been a miniature version of the S in the past so the current model is no different. But the E had always stood apart but I guess this approach is going away. MB is following BMW and Audi in having the entire sedan line up looking similar and personally, I don't much care for that.

I have always had a huge amount of respect for the E-Class. However in this new model I have to say I am not a huge fan of the "Two TV's" dash design. Moving to LCD/Glass cockpit is ok, but I would still want to retain the binnacle look/analog feel of a mechanical gauge cluster. I also like the sport seats in this model vs the quilted seat stitching I have seen in another model.

For those who want a Mercedes - the E-Class will be big hit. However - one must ALSO remember that in the USA - the E-class is now well into the Mid $50,000 and lkely to go up. That prices it well over the Cadillac CT6 and even more so over the Lincoln Continental - both of which are larger cars. If Cadillac gets it act together (always a question) - and they market the CT6 against the E-class - this could be a place where Cadillac could take come sales.

The current E starts at $52k. The CT6 starts at $53k. How is that "well over" the CT6?

When you go to the actual sale - the Cadillac - after discounts - will be considerably cheaper. In addition - that low price is a diesel - and NOT a all wheel drive. THe current E-350 4matic starts at $55,600 and good luck finding one at that price. Yes - the Cadillac CT6 6 cylinder 4x4 - the one I have - listed for about the same but Mercedes has - with the introduction of the new series cars- raised the prices. THe fact is - the local Mercedes dealer was thousands above for an "OLD" E-class - what I paid for my CT6. MSRP is not a real comparison price to me.
And of course - the Lincoln is thousands lower than either at MSRP - so the selling price will be even lower eventually.

Another fantastic vehicle from Mercedes Benz!
I am very curious how this current design language evolves however. I'll note that due to body-proportions, I think that the E-Class might be the best looking of the bunch.
The S-class has some awkward dimensions/proportions due to its large size, the C-class looks "scrunched" from certain angles, the E-class gets it just right.
Will the S-class refresh due this fall usher in a more evolutionary design, I wonder?

Not a fan of that dash at all. I do like the blue paint, kind of reminiscent of the RX-7's Montego Blue
