Joy Ride: MINI Self Driving Concept Switches To Sporty Driving Mode When Road Conditions Allow

Mini unveils a futuristic electric-powered, self-driving concept car to celebrate the 100th anniversary of parent BMW.

Called the Vision Next 100, the compact 4-seater showcases a new design lineage for the brand that eschews the retro look of today’s Mini models for a more contemporary appearance with modern proportions. It was developed as a response to what the British automaker describes as an ever-more digitalized and interconnected world.

The new concept also highlights plans for autonomous driving and digital intelligence technology Mini says will ensure an improved personal mobility experience by offering greater personalization and additional services.

Why must progress be ugly?

- Because designers are tired of beautiful?
- Because designers think this is cool, or perhaps attractive?
- Because designers are focusing on "different" rather than "beautiful"?
- Because those in the Ivory Tower decide so? (e.g., BMW with Flame Surface)
- Because it's a lot harder to do beautiful, and the designers have limited financial budgets and unrealistic time constraints, so they do what they can with the available resources?
- Because the really good designers, the ones who do "beautiful" really well, are too expensive; we'll make do with the more affordable ones?

Personally, I don't know Matt. But ever so sadly, I must agree with you. Lots and lots of car manufacturers are finding lots and lots of new ways to express ugly.
