SPIED + VIDEO: Next-Gen Porsche Cayenne SUV Caught IN ACTION During Testing

With its cult-like following in the suburbs, the Porsche Cayenne is easily considered a smashing success. Hell, now in its second generation, the Cayenne is one of the must have items if you live just outside a major metropolis.

THINK: It’s either a Land Rover Range Rover, a Cadillac Escalade or the Porsche Cayenne.

Sure there’s a lot of Audi Q7s, BMW X5s and Mercedes-Benz GLEs but if you’re looking to make a statement those aren’t the picks.

While the Stuttgart-based team has been cooking up some tasty updates for the second-gen Cayenne, it’s gotten too long in the tooth. We’re eagerly awaiting the third-gen Cayenne. There’s several reasons for this:

1) Porsche’s driving dynamics have improved;

2) The VW-owned manufacturer is expected to go on a much-needed diet that’s rumored to shed around 400 pounds; and,

3) Its exterior styling could get tidier.

In the latest video shot across the pond, it’s clear that Porsche is putting its developmental vehicles through hell to ensure you get the best product possible. Although some are reporting that the third-gen Cayenne is expected to be out next year, I may think it’s even a bit further out than that. These test vehicles do not appear to be equipped with the next-gen vehicle’s exterior, which makes me think that we’ve got some time to go here.

Then again, it is Porsche and as many have observed in the past, there’s zero guarantee the company will radically restyle its very successful Cayenne.

Check out the spy video, below!

Le futur Porsche Cayenne est encore fortement camouflé, mais son développement avance. Nos espions l'ont filmé en montagne, dans des conditions variées.

For the most part, I really like the Cayenne. I hope what looks like old-school round tail-lights aren't part of the new design.

A few of the oddities I'm not into:
- The 4-points-of-light DRLs (can't see them in the vid). I prefer BMW's simple round LED ring, or Audi's simple LED outline
- Keyless starter that resembles a huge, permanently fixed key-fob in an ignition socket to the left of the steering wheel. Why not a simple button on the center console.
- They've never quite got the rear lights spot on, like Audi did on the 2014/15/16 Q5 and latest Q3.

Otherwise, the Cayenne has my attention and enthusiasm.

BTW, when I refer to "Audi's simple LED outline" for DRLs, I'm referring to something like the current Q5. Not like a lot of other overly-stylized Audi headlights.

The V6 Cayenne with PDK is a POS. I had one 2016 loaner for a week, and it scared the hell out of me with its behavior. Twice I pulled out of an intersection to emerge into on coming traffic and the transmission just seized - the engine rev'ed but the car was not moving with the driver's side exposed to approaching cars. Luckily I just got honked for being such a donk. Brought the car back to Porsche after the second incident, complained to the service ref and was told it was normal PDK behavior because the loaner car has many drivers and it's confused. WTF ?

If anyone is buying the Cayenne, do yourself a favor and get at least the V8 because the V6 is severely under-powered for its heft. A GTS or Turbo is even sweeter. The V8 in dynamic mode is by far the best handling SUV I've driven, much better than RR Sport and X5.

And the quirky left-handed ignition has got to go. Forget this silly tradition Porsche!

Given that the second generation Cayenne was just a slight revision from the original Touareg design underpinning it, the time has come for Porsche to leave the overweight VW behind. The next Cayenne really needs to be aluminum intensive.
