BMW's rear-wheel drive compact family is getting ready to welcome a third member, after the Coupe and Convertible, which is believed to go on sale under the 2-Series Gran Coupe moniker.

The model, whose development has kicked off with an early prototype scooped at the Nurburgring, will use a slightly longer wheelbase than the one of its two siblings and it won't cannibalize the 3-Series sedan, which will grow in size for the next generation.

I'd love a 1 Series sedan aimed at the Jetta GLI rather than a cramped 2 series 4 door. The 2 Series is a brilliant opportunity squandered. It does what the 3 and 4 Series do almost as well and it costs almost as much. Because of that, sales are dismal.

The coupe is a 2+2 at best, so why not give it a fast roofline?

The coupe costs as much as a Mustang GT or a Camaro SS, so why not appeal to that demographic with a most intriguing alternative?

In short, why not make the 2 Series more than the size-reduced, beholden stepchild to the 3/4 Series?

This is NOT the rear-wheel drive 2 series it's the FWD model, it's easy to spot the differences between the two.
