Toyota Recalls 3.4 Million Cars For Leaky Fuel Systems And Non Lethal Airbag Defects

Toyota Motor Corp. said it’s recalling about 3.4 million vehicles to repair separate flaws involving leaky fuel tanks and curtain air-bag inflators that may crack and injure occupants.

The larger fuel tank recall affects 2.87 million vehicles worldwide, including Prius hybrids and Corolla compacts, the company said in an e-mail. Toyota said fuel emissions-control canisters could crack and result in leaks when the vehicles have full tanks of gas.

The other global recall of 1.43 million Prius hybrids and Lexus CT compact cars is to repair Autoliv Inc.-supplied curtain air bags that have partially inflated in parked vehicles. About 932,000 vehicles are involved in both recalls, Toyota said.

So.....here's the thing...as much as I love reading about how reliable Toyota/Lexus are and seeing them repeatedly at the top of JD and Consumer...I think it would be interesting to see how some of these auto manufacturers fair if these quality surveys factor in Recalls

A good buddy of mine who has just started a family is so annoyed by Toyota and what he says are consistent letters he receives every year about a new recall...which of course causes him to lose sleep thinking about his wife and newborn in a vehicle with chronic recalls

He bought Toyota for piece of mind and says although maintenance has never been a headache... the consistent recalls are...

except that all brands are going through the same thing....not just Toyota.

Not necessarily, not ALL brands are going through the same thing as Toyota, sure they all experience recalls here and there, but since 2009 Toyota/Lexus have consistently topped the recall list while simultaneously topping quality/consumer reports

A) No brand will be immune to recalls especially since more and more (sometimes unnecessary) stuff is being added to cars.
B) No brand will want to risk not being proactive, and even the smallest thing will trigger a recall. My Mazda 6 is at the dealership now because of a door latch recall!
C) This day and age there's no bad brand, at least no one is doing things purposely wrong.

I don't think anyone here nor the article mentioned any brand doing anything purposely wrong...that's kind of like asking to destroy business, nor did anyone say some brands are immune to it

However

When you have a brand that builds a reputation on quality products/dependability and surveys that consistently rank it as such year after year, I think it's also important to mention the rate of recalls

I mean it's not like Toyota/Lexus are huge innovators which would better explain the recalls, airbags being the exception, but everything else is pretty much basic.

And ofcourse they are being proactive, they learned their lesson after multiple Toyota/Lexus vehicles caused deaths in sudden acceleration, and they had to do a whole campaign afterwards in their commitment to safety

@Car4life1 all the fanboys will be coming up with excuses. They won't rate the recalls, that would be bad business for all this quality/consumer reports pumping out surveys.
I have been saying it for years, its all "Perceived" quality. Years ago these Japanese cars were indestructible but for the past 10 years or more they have had the same number of reliability/quality issues as other brands. Every time I complain about my old LS460 (which I purchased new and had the same number of reliability/quality issues as my old MB C230, the fanboys get all pissy. The point is that regardless of what you are taking in your car for, especially when new, its frustrating. That is why I don't trust any of this so quality/consumer reports, they are all BS.

lol it's cool everyone has their own opinion and they are entitled to it, but they are not entitled to their own facts....at the end of the day I just call it like I see it

Really people complaining about getting potential issues fixed for free.

My experience has correlated well with CR long term ratings as do many other 3rd party ratings. I have only returned to Toyota and Honda dealers for free maintenance, free service bulletin repairs and free recall service. Some here must enjoy their $500, $1000, or higher repair bills.
