2018 Pontiac GTO Rumors

2018 Pontiac GTO Rumors
The GTO is an iconic American muscle car which has been discontinued mostly because the Camaro was selling better than it and GM didn’t really see the need of a muscle car like the GTO. The car was revived briefly in the mid of 2000s but it was not a true GTO but a renamed Holden Monaro with different badges. The car was great but it did not sell that great mostly due to its rather odd design which made many people, not like it.

Back in 2013, Bob Lutz was saying that GM is preparing a new generation of the GTO but because the Pontiac brand has been discontinued these remained just rumors even though the information came from an individual close to GM. Despite that, it seems that GM might be working on such a car and a revival for the brand with the 2018 Pontiac GTO.

A Pontiac GTO or TransAm pulled from the Camaro and sold through Buick dealers would make sense. Pontiac need not be a full line automaker, but could literally be just one car.

I think the report is vapor, however. If it were real, we'd be seeing a GTO concept and prototypes. Of course the Ford Torino is coming back for 2017 supposedly. Vapor, I tell you.

Don't forget Oldsmobile. Lets bring back back all of the failed names, recreate the old dysfunctional company and see how long it takes them to run it into the ground again. I predict 45 minutes.

I happen to agree with you. While I do think a niche resurrection like a Pontiac GTO would increase sales of GM products in the segment, there simply isn't any reason GM couldn't just build the Avista and create a modern icon. Besides what would a GTO do that a Camaro SS/ZL1/Z28 doesn't already do?

They really do not have to resurrect the Pontiac Name to name a car - GTO - anymore than to name one GT. The advantage of using the old name is to bring back the good feelings of those who once had the cars (People tend to forget the bad things over time).

The problem was NOT that there were too many brands - it is that there were not enough DIFFERENT cars - they were producing essentially the same car with slight changes for two divisions. They already have a Camaro. If the only difference between that and a GTO would be styling (assuming that the engines - trans - platform - and performance would be similar) - there is NO reason to bring back the GTO. What ELSE could they do to make the GTO different enough from a Camaro - UNLESS - they move it upscale - to compete better with the European GT class cars. And then - it might be better being a Cadillac than anything else.

The Chevy SS is already a thing. It's basically the GTO. Except more expensive.
