SPIED: FIRST All-New Spy Shots Of The Next-Gen BMW 3-Series Testing
In BMW's ever-growing product portfolio, there's one vehicle that outsells the rest. That would be the 3-Series. The universally loved, accolade-winning luxury sedan that has been the benchmark for decades now.

While it's tough to argue that it still remains at the top of its class with all-new entrants like the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and all-new Audi A4, the 3'er is doing its best to hang on. Though it was just refreshed, we're turning our eyes to the next-generation 3-Series. That's because BMW has to bring its "A" game.

Though we're not entirely sure what will be in store for the next-gen Bimmer, we do know that it's been caught for the very first time during developmental testing on the 'Ring. Although the vehicle is heavily camouflaged at this super early stage, it's clear that the proportions are likely to remain largely the same with a footprint similar to the current-gen automobile. Styling is tough to tell at this point but we'll be keeping a close eye on it so when the camo comes off you're the first to know what's going on.

Here's what we think BMW needs to do in order to make the 3-Series more competitive:

- Lighten the load and drop weight
- Make use of the i8's 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine
- Make sure the steering rack provides as much feedback as possible and is unique when compared to the C-Class and A4
- Make an effort to ensure the interior is top notch and not low brow
- Follow the lead of other manufacturers and ensure the center stack has a 12+ inch infotainment screen

What say you, Spies?

Definitely bring all elements that can contribute to the "ultimate driving machine" to the fore. You have a couple there with weight and steering rack (engine??). To that I would add ride, the base car should ride like an e39 M5 did, handling should reflect rear wheel drive dynamics... no push...neutral. Cabin should reflect a driver centric environment with all major controls oriented towards the driver. Do something else to keep the passenger entertained or able to manipulate controls but don't reorient the dash controls away from the driver to accommodate that. I would like to see an all electric option or at least a hybrid with 80-100mile range on battery alone. Make the roof a solar panel.

Yawn. Wake me when a next generation 3 Series design can be distinguished from the last generation.

I absolutely agree. BMW needs to do something radical like ditching the kidneys and giving the 3 Series a new visual signature.

Funny to see how BMW may be looking up to the C-Class for the first time. The thing is that by the time the new 3 is out and about, Merc will be close to launching a replacement for the current C, which will leave the 3 back again on 2nd.

The all-new C-Class is tough to beat.

If the numbers don't come down to the "free" maintenance and what not then for me the choice is obvious.

Just me though...

BMW is in a precarious place. The C Class is simply that good so people wanting German excellence will probably go with Mercedes. Those wanting something different and catchy can gamble on the Giulia and XE.

The 3 Series isn't a bad product, but it is deadly dull visually. Ditto the A4.
