Dodge's new diesel debuts at Texas State Fair
The Texas State Fair was the location of another big truck announcement last week when Dodge announced its new Cummins turbo-diesel engine for the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500. Enlarged to 6.7 liters from 5.9 through increases in both bore and stroke, the new inline-six turbodiesel now boasts 350 horsepower and 650 ft-lbs. of torque, all while meeting stricter diesel emissions standards for 2007. The engine also features an optional exhaust brake function that improves braking under heavy towing situations, a common feature of big rigs and large motor coaches.

The new power ratings makes the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel competitive with new powerplants from both Ford and General Motors, each of which has also announced new or substantially upgraded diesel motors for 2007 and beyond.

These numbers do not reflect the performance numbers coming out for the pickup truck models in the first quarter of 2007. These are the numbers for the Cab Chassis 3500 only, which has been introduced early (fall '06).

Ram Pickup 2500-3500 w/ 6.7 Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel
350 HP / 650 lbs of torque @ 1500 RPM.

These performance numbers match that of the new Ford/International 6.4 Twin Turbo 32 Valve V8, and fall short to the new Duramax 6.6 32 Valve V8 by only 10 horsepower and 15 lbs of torque, so Dodge is definitely in the game, especially considering they are still pitting an I6 against two comporable V8s. All three of these engines will come out at approximately the same time, and will run ULSD fuel only. They will be up to 90% cleaner burning, and will be more refined and more powerful. Gassers can no longer compete except on price.

Dodge says that the new engine will get better fuel economy. The old engine was estimated--not by the EPA who does not estimate fuel economy on HLDTs--@ 13 city, 18 hwy, and was comporable to the other two HLDTs (over 8500 GVWR), and was equal to that of the 5.7 Hemi which has 300 lbs less torque.

Magazine field testers generally get better fuel economy when testing these diesel trucks than those estimates. For instance, one article that pitted three regular-cab duallies against each other found the F350 @ almost 20 mpg, empty @ 70 mph. The Dodge and Chevy also came in around 19 mpg. There is a huge difference in fuel economy, however, depending on which truck one buys. There are so many configurations that differ in height, weight, axle ratio, SRW versus DRW, and tire/wheel size that the fuel economy can vary up to 10 mpg.

They are pretty weak, but this is a truck diesel. Audi makes 500 hp and 738 pounds of torque out of its 6 liter V12 TDI.

Wrong.

These new engines marketed by the "Big Three" are definitely using the latest technologies. The Ford/International 6.4 V8 uses sequential, dual VT turbo-charging--only previously seen in a recently introduced BMW--and piezo injection which is part of the latest, 3.1 generation injection system. The Duramax will have a graphite-composite iron block and piezo injection. The Cummins I6 uses a revolutionary new EGR system to reduce NOx that has never been seen before in the autoworld.

These engines are built by U.S.-based, globally-marketed tractor-trailer engine manufacturers. They are definitely on top of the latest technologies for no other reason than to meet future emission requirements.

These trucks are not competing--as heavily--on 0-60 times or power-to-weight ratios. They must be designed to work hard for several hundred thousand miles and stay cool while working hard.

Compare any gas engine designed for a truck against a gas-powered performance sedan, and you'll find the same thing. Less horsepower with more displacement.

Lets drop one of these Audi V8 TDIs in a 1 1/4 ton truck (F450), and let it pull 24,000 lbs for 300,000 miles. It has the power to do it, but not the durability or breatheability.. I don't think the Audi engine is designed for that any more than the Ford was designed to out perform an Audi perfomance sedan for performance and refinement.

The U.S. manufacturers are only losing slight market share in the 1/2 market where there is a new player--Nissan, and they have lost no market share in the over 8500 GVWR class, because they are the only players. Ford has actually gained a point or two, even with the introduction of the Titan in the half-ton class. The 1/2 ton market has lost sales all the way around, and the Titan is the big loser with sales down 50% (2005 versus 2006 to date sales).

It's different application of the same technologies, but U.S. manufacturers are responding as they fear Asian introduction in their last bastian of dominance (Heavy-light Duty Trucks). It's not necessarily that they fear the Asian competitors will be better, but that there will be more players. More players means less market share. The same can be said in the passenger car market. There was a day when it was only the Big Three, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and the Germans. Now Korea is in the game. China is coming next. This spells trouble for all long-time players; not just the Americans.

The performance of the pickup's diesel is shall we say adequate. The german's diesels are for performance, not hauling or towing. Besides, just check out the price difference. By the way, Toyota is coming out with a Twin Turbo Diesel V8 for its near future trucks and SUVs. Tundra included.

Isn't the Dodge Cummins 6.7L diesel a 6 cylinder engine?

And doesn't it generate 650 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm?

Though it seems purposely "low-tech", it's heft is almost enough to pull the homes of the owner's of the luxo-cars listed above.

Around 13 mpg, but with a less powerful gas powered enginesm, even less, probably around 10.
