BMW Sales Plummet 10.2% In June

Notable vehicle sales include the BMW 7 Series which increased 69.2 percent, the BMW 2 Series which increased 139.4 percent, and the BMW X3 which increased 69.5 percent.

“The mid-point to the year always brings some uncertainly about what may be ahead in the second half, so I’m very pleased to see several of our key models showing strong results in June,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “The X1 and X3 are indicative of the still growing trend toward Sports Activity Vehicles, but the numbers also show that great cars like the BMW 7 Series and 2 Series have a strong appeal and following.”

Did BMW offer a free X3 with a 7 Series purchase? First month that the new 7 essentially matched the S-class sales.

Not bad BMW, last year the X5 and X6 just did EXTREMELY well for June or someone cooked the books...

5 series took a beating but that's consistent with last year so all in all not bad

The BMW 4-Series, X4, X5, and X6 have all seen declines of more than 10% YTD meanwhile Audi's strong sales of its SUVs are the reason why Audi has kept its consecutive monthly record sales streak alive.

BMW clearly needs to address its SUVs because we all know that SUVs have become more popular in the U.S. market and if BMW can't fix its SUV sales problem, its overall U.S. sales will continue to see sharp declines.

BMW had warned that its U.S. sales were going to be under pressure throughout the summer and they were right.

BMW's cheap interiors, indistinguishable exterior styling, perceived lack of technological innovation, and focus on performance (which isn't even that great anymore) at the expense of luxury and ride quality have made it pay dearly.

In one year BMW will lose both its U.S. and global sales lead to Mercedes-Benz. As SUVs are growing in market share, Audi and Mercedes-Benz are delivering excellent options in that category and seeing sales growth while BMW is down 2.7% YTD.

Not mentioned in the headline: BMW beat Mercedes in June 2016.

You can focus on the % decrease from June 2015 if you want, but June 2015 was just a ridiculous month where they beat everyone else by thousands of units (Benz sold 28k units in June 2015, BMW sold 32k). I mean, seriously, 7500 X5's? 1500 X6's? 6600 4's? They were never going to repeat that. Everyone else was also down last month, or eked out tiny gains, simply because they didn't have an impossible to duplicate June 2015.

Read more carefully Bimmer also sold 28k edging Benz by a few hundred units. The 32k you are referring too includes Mini

As far as year to date, no one is touching Benz.

I see you were quoting 2015 figures, but a few hundred units more for one month is not really headline considering you moved over 30k last June...

Reading comprehension. Try it sometime. June 2015 was an anomaly month for BMW where they outsold the next closest competitor by 4k units. That was never going to happen this time. So the % were down while everyone else remained flat or was also down, and still ended up #1 for the month. They're behind Benz for the year, yes. In my opinion they screwed up years ago by focusing on an X4 instead of a 1-series sedan to compete with the CLA. But that's a story for a different thread. This is about last month, and last month they were #1, period.

COMMON SENSE...practice it some time, no publication, blog, or BMW themselves is going to jump for joy at a.few hundred units more sold 1 month when Benz literally leads by THOUSANDS both national and internationally period.

the same excuse you have for Bimmer's X4 could be Benz's for phasing out the E Class for the All New...so chill

Thousands over six months starts with hundreds over one month. #1 for June is #1 for June. You were wrong. The end. And again Im not a BMW apologist --I think the folks who run BMW made a historically bad decision by ignoring the CLA and A3 and focusing on niche models that hardly sell. But we can start a new thread about brand missteps if you want. The fact is they were #1 last month.

Actually you are wrong because if you scroll up, no where did I say BMW wasn't number 1 for June, come on I know you aren't that slow.

Regardless of BMW ignoring the CLA and A3, if you've noticed their real rea of opportunity is with the GL, a huge market, the 320i isn't far off the price point of a CLA anyway if you cared to do some research, sure they could enter but where they have missed big is with the 5 series, the 7 series which finally stepped up to the S Class this month, and a noteworthy GL competitor.

Now at the end of the month guess what is now July, who's #1? Benz, now get over it.

No BMW executive will say, "Our sales are down 9% YTD and we trail Mercedes-Benz by over 9,000 units in the U.S. and way more than that globally but fear not because even though our sales fell 10% in the U.S. last month we were still number 1!!"

BMW is struggling mightily in the U.S. and is failing to keep up with its competitor's global sales growth.
