Happy 40th Birthday To One Of The MOST Important Cars Built Today, The Honda Accord
While automakers tend to go a bit bonkers when something special reaches an anniversary, I don't think you'll see the same reaction from a brand that tends to be a bit more low key. Remember the hubbub surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911?

Honda is going to take the high road with the 40th birthday of its Accord. Annually one of the best selling products in the US market, the Accord is an important vehicle. Much like the Ford F-150 and the Accord's rival, the Toyota Camry, these are the products people need to deliver a variety of fronts.

The Accord has been a cheap all-around car for a long time and it's appropriate we recognize how great of a vehicle it's been. While I admit I am not so keen on the earlier models, I will tell you today that there's no question that the 2016 model year product is seriously impressive. Though I drove a $35,000+ Touring model that had the kitchen sink thrown in, you can slip into one for about $23,000 no problem.

What truly blew my mind was how the V6-equipped Touring I drove felt like the Acura Legend. After one week with the car I realized that unless you really need all-wheel drive — and you really don't (just get proper winter tires) — you can skip the A brand. The Accord is powerful, comfortable, well equipped and while it may not be perfect it's a damn good effort that should last you plenty of time.

Having driven a Civic for a number of years, and family members who are repeat owners, I can attest to the fact these vehicles are trouble free. Though it may not light my fire, there's no question it's hard to argue against a product that checks all the boxes for the everyday person.

For that, we salute you. To another 40 years with the Honda Accord!

Happy B-Day Accord, much respect, here's to the next 40. I gotta say while I've never owned an Accord, no matter what stage of my life I've been in from toddler to now my 20's, I've always known someone that has an Accord and have probably gotten a ride in more than a few generations of the Accord.

Side note...when I saw the pic of the latest Accord, I thought it was an Acura and the title was wrong. Although they are all Honda anyway outside of North America...

I had a Gen 2 but Gen 4 will always be my favorite.

While the Civic rescued Honda from oblivion both as a company and as being viable in the USA, it was the Accord that really showed Honda in a leadership role. The Accord is why the first Camry came to be. The Accord--as a 4 door, FWD sedan--was not a game changer because VW did the Dasher/Passat first, but Honda did it right. Toyota caught on and VW to this day has not figured out how to play the CamCord game.

MD, I wouldn't be so harsh on Camry who's been around for almost the same time. Furthermore, Mazda 6 (626) may have preceded Accord by one or two years if I'm not mistaken. The failed Passat is a different story.

@carsnyc you need to get your facts straight. I said NOTHING harsh about the Camry and the Camry has NOT been around as long as the Accord. In fact, the Accord predates the Camry by 6 years. Toyota saw how successful the Accord was and quickly rushed the first Camry to market. The Mazda was not FWD until AFTER the Accord showed the winning formula. Moreover the Capella/626/6 has never been in the hunt in the CamCord wars.

Im not a Honda fan, but the Accord and the Civic essentially defined their segments and others followed. Toyota converted the Corolla to FWD largely because of the Civic as I understand it.

I remember the first Accord. I remember you could not find one that was available due to the incredible demand for anything that was not made in America. The Honda quality and high M.P.G. was the holy grail of cars.

The public was fed up with the remarkably pathetic America designs, unacceptable America build quality, and preposterously terrible American m.p.g. Sound familiar?

I think it's the perfect car for picking up someone at an airport, or purchasing cleaning supplies at a hardware store.

Wait a minute? You do your own cleaning? You do know that the supplies will be cheaper at WalMart right? Ifyou drive the Accord there, you'll look like a king.

My '89 was the worst car I've ever owned. Just horrible. Thank god I can afford nice new European cars now.
