The current WRX STI has been around for a long time and even though the chassis of the car has been revamped a few times, its EJ engine is the same as it was more than a decade ago so it offers its torque quite high up the rev range and it is not really the easiest to work on or even the most efficient out there. We already know that the 2017 Subaru WRX STI is going to be nearly the same as the current model but only with a few minor differences inside the cabin where it is expected to receive a bit more gear as well as slightly better materials

Sounds like a significant update and without all the shouty bits could attract a larger audience. They should keep the shouty bits as available for people who need them (track junkies) or just want them (they like the racer on the street look).

Doing two WRX models one that is civilized and one that is import tuner boy oriented would be a great strategy. I'd even give them completely different noses to differentiate them.

How about a modern inline 4 or a pressurized V6 instead of the noisy, vibration-prone Super Beetle engine?

Well Porsche will be/is/has gone back to a similar "Super Beetle" engine.

Every car manufacturer has a gimmick, horizontally opposed engines and awd are Subaru's. If Subaru did anything else, it would simply be a Toyota with better build quality and reliability.
