2017 Volvo XC90 – Model That Will Impress Everyone
The XC90 has been released for a few years now and not that long ago Volvo announced an update for the 2017 Volvo XC90. This would consist out of an all new four seats Excellence version, but more on that later.

Some rumors also suggested that on top of this new version the car would also receive a new trim level, likely a few changes to its exterior as well as updated engines. All of these should allow the Swedish company to stay in the game and possibly win its class. While not the best selling car in its class, the XC90 is by far one of the better offerings out there.

The XC90 annualizes at 32K in sales. Granted that's not terrible, but it's by far NOT the hit Volvo needs to sustain itself. Volvo needs a vehicle that can hit 100K sales in North America.

Any insights as to why its not doing better? For me, the third row is not large enough, but have seen them in the showroom - the XC90 is a better choice than a Q7, X5, LR4 or Range Rover Sport. The XC90 is the best looking, best interior, and roomiest of that group.

I'm not sure is people care about the 4 cylinder or not - it seems to drive just fine.

A lot has to do with market placement. Had the XC90 be positioned to the penny against the Explorer and Highlander, then it would have generated more sales.

Volvo is not now--nor has it ever been--a premium brand. People do not speak Volvo and Mercedes in the same breath. Volvo is a Buick, Acura, Lincoln, possibly Subaru-level brand, but not a Mercedes competitor.

Yet the XC90 is priced like a Mercedes.

It's an attractive vehicle, but it does not have the visual impact of a similarly priced Mercedes, nor does it have the name panache of a BMW or an Audi. You can buy the same squared-off lines at an Audi dealership and people know you are driving a premium brand because they associate Audi with premium.

SAAB and Volvo were always the European near-do-well brands. You bought a Volvo if you couldn't afford a Mercedes, but did not want to be caught in something mainstream like a VW.

Volvo should play against Acura, Buick, and Lincoln and perhaps grab some Subaru for good measure.

I find the 4 cylinder in the XC90 to be ghastly and would rather have a V6 or a Yamaha V8.

The 4 cylinder and Chinese ownership keep me away.

I've never associated Volvo as a luxury brand. OK, Ford owned Volvo at one period & lumped it into a "premiere automotive group (PAG)". Volvo is upscale at best & has retained its quirky unique place in the market. But really, most of the other Volvos are still using the stuff Ford developed for the brand a decade ago. How can a consumer pay premium prices for that?

Also, they're using funky 2.0L 4-bangers (which are nice) on the top trim models. The top trim XC90 needs at least 400hp or 400lb-ft tq performance to help exude luxury. Otherwise most consumers wont take Volvo serious in the US.

Maybe these new Volvos will make good CPO cars in that market. I'm just guessing tho...

The wife liked it, until the price discussion started.
We bought a QX60 instead, fully loaded(rear-dvd, backseat skylight, upgraded sound etc...)for $53K
Sorry, the equivalent for over $65K?? Not worth it...
