VIDEO Drag Race: BMW M2 vs Ford Mustang GT - Can American Muscle Win Out Over German Sophistication?
Two more disparate takes on the two-door, four-seat coupe it’d be difficult to find. In the blue corner, BMW’s muscular M2, and in the red, the sophisticated new Ford Mustang GT.

While the former opts for a turbocharged inline-six, its American rival is the old-school option, with a five-litre, naturally-aspirated V8. The technology gap widens further with their transmissions: This particular BMW has a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, while the ‘Stang puts a simple and hefty six-speed manual lever between the seats.

Not a fair comparison, they should have compare the GT350 against the M2. Base prices are about the same. Kudos to the M2, that thing is really fast.

The GT350 is the better head-to-head comparison, I agree, but between these two, I'd take the GT simply for the sound and infinitely more attractive styling.

The Mustang is perfect for people with a high school education to drive to the bowling alley.

On the other hand, the BMW is for entitled, douchebag narcissists who think everyone should give them top priority.

I didn't know you bowl MDarringer.

I actually do. LOL and I'm damn good at it. Then again I'm good at a lot of things. Granted my education is three degrees beyond high school but I digress.

Nonsense. The BMW is an incredible machine built for people who can appreciate and afford it. The Mustang, on the other hand, is good at driving fast in a straight line (though not as good as the BMW). By the way, congrats on that excellent bowling!

You obviously have not driven an IRS Mustang.

This questions should be targeted towards the under 25 demographic. If you're over 25 years old and interested in any of these cars you've made a wrong turn somewhere.

@MBKing What drugs are you taking? I'm coming up on 30 and would not turn either of these away. Moreover, the under 25 demographic cannot afford these cars universally. Instead, a lot of these cars will be sold to older buyers if anything.

@MDarringer I weep for you. I daily drove a 135i from 23 to 25 and bought my 1M shortly after my 25th birthday. My biggest complaint with both cars was the feminine styling, my opinion, and the fact that I would pull up to a traffic light next to a high schooler who would be in an almost identical looking 128i (hence my 25 demographic comment). I would be interested to hear what you actually drive because clearly you speak like someone with much experience but I have a feeling you're not coming with a lot of actual automobile ownership history with the way that you make these comments. If this is the 3rd or 4th car in your garage (your parents garage in your case) then I get it, a fun track car or toy for the weekends to burn the tires and have a laugh, by all means, enjoy it. But at 30 I hope you'd look for something much more age appropriate and less kid racer to drive to work and well frankly be an adult in around town. And please, don't make assumptions about what people can afford or not afford at a certain age, these types of comments make it seem like you haven't seen much in your "almost" thirty years.

I call bullshit!!!

The M2 has a Dual Clutch. I was suspicious when they never showed the center console.

would the Mustang have fared better with the available 6-speed automatic?

@JRobUSC that's a very good question seeing as how good the automatic is for shifting.

I think the question becomes:

How much closer in performance, albeit in a straight line, is the Mustang to the M2?

Consider that the Dual Clutch is a $3000 option alone in the U.S. I do not know how it would effect pricing in the U.K.

Yes-A fairer comparison would have been manual against manual. I still think the M2 would have won but it would have been a lot closer. Saying that The Mustang GT is not the full on sports car that an M2 or even a Camaro SS is. It is a very good looking car and for a sports coupe it is relatively easy to see out of and comfortable. In stock form the GT is simply sprung too soft for optimal handling. The track pack should offer some GT350 suspension pieces. An average equipped M2 is still about 15 K more than an average equipped GT so it should offer better performance. I just think a standard GT could be made better in the suspension department then it currently is. Perhaps the 2018 refresh will address some of these things. Then of course there is the ecoboost model. Why can't Ford simply offer the same in engine it has for the Ford Focus RS. In that car the engine sounds so much better than in the Mustang. Further why does Ford treat the base V6 as the runt of the litter? There is an opportunity for improvement instead of forcing V6 customers to go to the aftermarket.
