CAR WARS! Would You Rather Have A NEW Mazda MX-5 Or A USED Porsche Boxster?
In the roadster world, it's hard to find two vehicles that are as loved and as respected as the Mazda MX-5 and the Porsche Boxster. Both are serious roadsters with only one objective in mind: To provide the driver with a fun motoring experience.

While there may be a significant price gap when comparing both offerings new, it's a bit different when you open up the used car classifieds for the Porsche Boxster. And, if you're asking us, it definitely makes the choice more difficult.

There's something to be said for a Porsche; however, there's also something to be said for having your own all-new vehicle that hasn't been sneezed, or farted in, by anyone else other than yourself. So, assuming the pricing is equal or as close to equal as possible, what would YOU choose?

An ALL-NEW MX-5 Miata or a USED Porsche Boxster?

See what Autocar's reviewers thought when it put them together for review purposes.

...It feels, in fact, an altogether more serious proposition than the MX-5, whose roll movements fall more quickly, slightly unsettlingly, while the steering is more remote. With 158bhp, it’s slower than the Porsche, and because it has four cylinders, it doesn’t sound as good, either.

But as a road car, it’s still terrifically good fun; it’s compact, there’s a snappy gearshift and it responds with great agility. There’s also the appeal of running a new car whose problems, should it have any, you won’t have to give a thought to for three years.

Still, given the choice, I’d stick with the Boxster. How about you, Chris? Keeper of this Boxster, yes, but presented with an MX-5 in cold steel in front of you, could you imagine opting for the new Mazda over the old Porsche?

A pause. Not very long. “No,” he said. That’s that, and I am in agreement...

Ditto. Either one is a great car but Boxster is a cut above for sure.

I would rather have the Cayman too because I prefer coupes to convertibles, so to that end...

I'd rather have a 914-6 conversion which can be done for pennies, is reliable, with great handling.

If you want true convertible feel the Porsche isn't it. The sills are too high and the windshield is too raked.

For me the Z3 is the best overall open air motoring feel, which may explain why I can;t give mine up.
