Which Is The BEST Everyday Supercar? McLaren 570S vs Audi R8 V10 Plus vs Porsche 911 Turbo S

It’s been a tough time for the McLaren Formula One squad, which hasn’t won a race in nearly four years. However, while the brand’s racers have struggled, its road car division has gone from strength to strength.

Since 2012 its line-up has ballooned from one car to eight – and the latest is the 570. Based on similar carbon fibre underpinnings to its stablemates, the newcomer is designed as a supercar you can live with day to day. That makes it the most spacious and practical McLaren yet. Of course, there’s plenty of performance, too, due to the 562bhp twin-turbo V8. The 570 is available in luxurious GT and racy S guises; we test the latter here.

When I think of an "everyday ride", I think:
- Reliable (few failures)
- Durable (lasts a long time with lots of miles on the clock)
- Uneventful maintenance and repair costs
- Comfortable
- Easy to enjoy
- Suitable for a 90-minute rush-hour crawl
- Suitable for a 2-day road trip, cruising 1,200 miles
- Reasonable fuel economy, with long-range fuel tank for road trips
- Reasonable space for hauling groceries, road-trip provisions, or the occasional barbecue or ladder

When I think of "Supercar", I think:
- Power
- Surefooted handling in the twisties
- Spirited
- Sexy looking
- Low-slung, compact, and did I mention sexy as hell?

So when some says "everyday supercar", I can't help but wonder: What have we compromised? You simply can't get it ALL in one package.

The Audi is ungainly looking and everyone knows you cant afford the real Lamborghini.

The McLaren looks like what the Mitsubishi Eclipse would look like were it made today.

That leaves the Porsche. Porsches are surprisingly good about being normal cars.

I disagree.

The Audi R8 V10 is for the buyer who wants exotic looks with everyday driveability and a sense of occasion.

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is for the buyer who wants a sports car with calculated performance and boring design that is hardly distinguishable from a regular 911 in looks and now even performance.

As the article states, "This is the easiest car to live with every day, yet it’s also hugely fast and engaging. Its outright ability is on par with its rivals, but in a test that demands thrills its low-key approach lets it down. Plus, the latest Carrera turbos give you 90 per cent of the S’s ability for two-thirds the cost."

Why pay Porsche money for an Audi nameplate?

MDarringer: I used to ache for a McLaren 12C. Gorgeous inside and out. Easy to enjoy. True hypercar. Then the 12C was replaced by their current swishy "inspired by Nike" look. Ick :-(

I used to ache for an Audi R8. Gorgeous inside and out. Easy to enjoy. True sports car. The it got replaced by their current "designed with cardboard, rulers, and box-cutters" styling. Ick :-(

Of the three, Porsche is the only one that's still easy on the eyes. Call me shallow, but I can't appreciate a car -- no matter how "good" it is -- if it's unattractive to my eyes.

Maybe because the Audi R8 doesn't look like a car that costs less than half as much.

Why pay Porsche 911 Turbo S money when you can get a regular Porsche 911 Carrera for less than half the price but more than half the performance and 99% of people can't even tell the difference?

The R8 is style challenged to hell and back and yes you're a blind apologist...we know.

You're entitled to your opinion of the Audi R8 and I obviously disagree with you - I think it looks fantastic! I think the Porsche 911 Turbo S is a bland, emotionless choice for the buyer with no creativity.

Of course it is the 911 Turbo. The word "everyday" means practical and easily usable. The word "Supercar" does not necessarily mean super styling. Usually with super styling you tend to lose some everyday practicality. Therefore supercar in my definition is more about a vehicles overall performance. Not about how cool it looks. The 911 turbo has 90 to 95% of the performance capabilities of all the remaining cars listed but it is an everyday usable practical car.
What makes it so. First ease of getting into it is better than all the rest. Second you can easily see out of it front back and sideways. Third it is fairly quiet when you are not on it. Fourth you can fit little people in the back or small adults in a pinch. Fifth-Because it looks fairly ordinary compared to the others it immediately signifies every day use.

while i agree with most of you about the 911 turbo S being a bland car in some ways, if i won the lottery it would probably be the first car id buy. i really do think its the perfect every day car. insane performance, 4 seats, reasonable price considering the performance. as far as looks go, its def not as exotic as a mclaren or r8.
