STUD or DUD: It’s Official, The Hyundai Elantra Sport Is Here — Would You RATHER Have It Over A Honda Civic Si?
It was not too long ago that we showed you images of the upcoming Hyundai Elantra Sport. Thanks to an eagle-eyed Spy, we provided you with a first look at Hyundai’s all-new attempt to grab marketshare.

After offering the rather quirky Veloster that had mixed results in The States, the company is going a more traditional route. By giving its very popular sedan a more sporting look and more powerful engine, it’s clear that the Korean automaker is going after the likes of the Volkswagen Jetta GLI and Honda Civic Si — we’re awaiting the latest sporty Civic now that the all-new generation is here.

What you’ll find is a rather enticing 1.6-liter four-cylinder mill good for 200 horsepower and 190 lb.-ft. of torque in the Elantra Sport. Mated to this will be either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

On the inside you’ll find a red contrasting stitch, more aggressively bolstered seating and a “D-cut” steering wheel — flat-bottomed, in lay terms.

So, what do you make of this all-new entrant, Spies? Is this enough to color you interested? Is the all-new Hyundai Elantra Sport a STUD or DUD?

Hyundai's press release follows:

2017 HYUNDAI ELANTRA SPORT UNLOCKS PASSION, POWER AND PERFORMANCE

1.6 Turbo GDI engine and independent multi-link rear suspension highlight the most powerful and dynamic Hyundai Elantra ever

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., July 12, 2016 – Today at a meeting of the Washington Automotive Press Association in Alexandria, VA, Hyundai Motor America unveiled the all-new 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport. The most powerful Elantra model ever, the Sport benefits from a variety of important powertrain, chassis and styling upgrades over the current SE, Eco, and Limited models.

The Elantra Sport is powered by a 1.6 Turbo GDI four-cylinder engine generating more than 200 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. Drivers may choose between a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission with paddle shifters. Helping to ensure the most powerful Elantra ever is also the most fun to drive, the Sport is exclusively outfitted with an independent multi-link rear suspension designed to elevate on-road dynamics and feel. Finally, Elantra Sport is visually differentiated with unique bodywork and model-specific interior appointments such as a flat-bottomed steering wheel, sport seats and red contrast stitching.

“Elantra Sport demonstrates our commitment to providing drivers with compelling vehicle choices that align with their interests,” says Mike Evanoff, Hyundai Motor America manager of product planning. “This is a vehicle that reflects our own passion for cars and driving, expressing it with sharp looks, proven in-car technology, upgraded power, and fun, sporty handling.”

The Hyundai Elantra Sport will arrive in North American showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2016. Additional details, including full specifications and pricing, will be available closer to the on-sale date.

Cool. They can save a few bucks by sharing grills with the new A8.

Well it certainly looks a little like an SI sedan. However it's all about how it drives and feels while driving. I must say, however, that the interior looks nice.

Why don't you wait until Honda unveils its Civic Si until you ask if anyone wants to choose another car over a Civic Si?

This is an excellent move. The real question is why would anyone buy a Jetta GLI.

The Jetta is dull looking.
We have not compared the performance of the two.
Hyundai will have better build quality, reliability, durability, and will be much lower in cost to maintain.

Comparing this turd to a GLI is like comparing a Fiat to a Lexus... try again chump

@trboaccord you're clearly a bigot against Koreans because Hyundais are far from turds.

Got to love it when Mattie calls others bigots when he holds an executive position Skinheads International.

From another post today when someone forgot salute and say Heil Mattie, ruler of all things Hyundai - - - -

"You're such a pathetic #tool I hope you're getting paid because you are cloudcuckooland crazy about the Third Reich brands."

Has nothing to do with Koreans it is simply the fact that Hyundai in all aspects falls well short of any VW product especially when comparing this car to a GLI.. take a close look at this car and you seem them imitating the GLI with the stitching, seats, trim, headliner but at the end of the day it is an Elantra and after 6 months or so its just a rattle trap... they always say if you cant make it then fake it well this is exactly that

#delusional...Hyundai kills VW for build quality, reliability, durability, and cost of maintenance

Sorry but I'm with Matt on this one. There's simply no comparison and VW loses on reliability alone.

Agreeing with me isn't fatal and I'm sure I'll piss you off sooner or later anyway, but this Elantra is a major sign of Hyundai's confidence. They have their design, quality, reliability, styling, and price targets met and the company is going gangbusters, so now it's time to start slicing away at the niches.

Hyundai/Kia is a great company.

People laughed at the Kia K900 and the Hyundai Equus. Yes, they were not S Class quality, but they were easily Lexus LS quality. Combining those two models, HK easily outsold the Jaguar XJ and the Audi A8.

You cry foul and say but there is a quality difference. Yes, you are correct. The HK twins are much more reliable than the Jaguar and the Audi.

I cannot wait to see the G90.

The Elantra "GLI" will likely be followed by a reborn Veloster "GTI".

Bigots can bash the Koreans and the Chinese, but the former are on point and the latter will be as well, mark my word.

Sort of looks like an old Ford Escort/Focus sedan from the side profile.

VWs certainly have issues. Can't say I know any satisfied owners.

The exterior is handsome enough, but nothing outstanding about it. The non-Si Civic and the Mazda3 still easily look better. And recent Hyundai interiors just leave me cold. Sure, they have decent materials, but the designs are outright sterile and generic. Again, the non-Si Civic and the Mazda3 easily surpass this Elantra. Previous Hyundai interiors at least looked like they were trying, despite all of them looking like Autobots and Decepticons applied to interior design.
