A Sign Of Trouble? - GM More Than Doubles Discounts On Pickups After Ford Durability Attacks Fail

General Motors Co. more than doubled discounts on some of its large pickups in July’s first 10 days after U.S. sales of the highly profitable models fell last month despite ads attacking the durability of Ford Motor Co.’s aluminum-bodied trucks.

Incentives averaged $7,962 on the Chevrolet Silverado, up 76 percent from June levels, and $9,457 on the GMC Sierra, an increase of 147 percent, according to J.D. Power data obtained by Bloomberg. Ford offered $4,457 on its F-150 and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV had discounts of $6,172 on its Ram, according to the research firm.

The discounts at Chevy and GMC are massive. Good trucks. Consumer wins.

I only wish the same discounts were true for Jeep Wranglers lol.

overpriced and poor reliability history = big discounts
Latest advertising says up to 20% rebates plus the ~10% dealer markup could net 30% MSRP.

Chevys are not unreliable trucks. But, yes discounts are steep.

The dealer contribution is a bit of smoke and mirrors because if the dealer is putting "its own money" on the hood there is usually a behind-the-scenes dealer incentive to fund it.

My take on it is GM knows it cannot compete with the aluminum F150. Their aluminum pickup is in the works but not ready for prime time.

GM's attempt to say that the Ford was not durable because of aluminum construction failed miserably. Thus, Ram is the target and GM has more financial might than FCA to buy sales.

If GM can increase sales at Ram's expense, they will have succeeded.

The Silverado and Sierra are infinitely better than the Ram 1500.
