General Motors May Shutter UK Plants Over EU Exit

Of all manufacturers building cars in the UK, analysts say General Motors is the one mostly likely to shift its operations to mainland Europe if costs rise because of the country's decision to leave the European Union.

GM builds the Vauxhall/Opel Astra compact hatchback in Ellesmere Port in northwest England, but there was a "high" risk it would shift production to Germany or Poland, LMC Automotive said in a report

The UK will have the last laugh. More than likely there will be other defectors before too long.

MDarringer: How will the UK have the last laugh? Are they gonna build a Trump-style wall around the island to keep immigrants out and commerce in?

I agree, the EU is for globalists not citizens. I love how the British people had their own Tea Party, except they tossed Belgian Waffles into the English Channel. All the doom & gloom is because the puppet-masters lost and Freedom won. IF GM closes and states Brexit its playing politics even tho I can see there might be higher costs in the region, combined with over capacity. Now is the time for the UK to do what they have to do to keep industry and think of their own citizens vs the collective. This will be after they shut their borders of course. Hopefully a prequel for the red, white & blue...

@TheSteve don't be a fascist/socialist/DeMoncrat tool. The UK is taking back their market. This will benefit THEM. I like you, but on this issue you're being an unintelligent ass tool.

MDarringer: I'm NOT saying the UK made a big mistake. I actually hold no opinion either way. I was simply asking how they will benefit? I guess the comparison to Trump's isolationist and xenophobic rhetoric has struck a nerve for some.

@TheSteve Brexit has NOTHING to do with isolationism but instead sovereignty.

The EU was all about Germany trying to create a "country" and then controlling it economically. I predict Germany will do its own "Gexit" to dump all the failing economies of the rest of the EU members. Germany needed the UK to be a part of the EU. The UK didn't need the EU or Germany and now Germany modern-day mein kampf is going down the toilet.

Aside from Germany, the UK is the only other powerful economy. France--because of their socialism--is always teetering from one fiscal crisis to another. France does not understand that Germany is their biggest threat economically.

Then you have the welfare states that are a part of the EU that countries like the UK and Germany were having to prop up.

As for GM, it has a massive overproduction capacity in Europe and is making cars that aren't especially in the race. Brexit gives GM an excuse to shutter facilities

Brexit provides GM cover for closing plants it wanted to anyway due to poor European sales performance. "Blame it on Brexit not us" strategy being employed by GM.

TheSteve: the wall is for illegals, not "immigrants". Immigrants, "immigrate" which is a legal process.... the wall is for the millions of law breakers not those that respect our laws

There is absolutely NO chance of a wall like that being built. In order to do it - it would be required to pass in both the house and the senate - and I doubt that it could even get a majority of republican votes in either the house or the senate. Even if it could pass the house - it would not get through a filibuster in the senate.

Fact is - It would need major funding - Mexico is not going to pay for it. AND it probably would not even get through the house ways and means committee.

IMHO they should have worked within the EU framework to fix the issues. I know a number of IT companies that are now looking at moving major operations out of UK and into mainly Germany. Same with banks...moving out of the EU framework makes commerce more difficult across that EU/Uk border. With the uncertainty of what that will look like and the ease of shifting IT many are looking to move now rather than wait and hope the UK can negotiate a great deal with the EU where they can get all the benefits (free trade zone, common regulations etc...) with none of the responsibilities.

The people spoke which should give freedom lovers hope that the ability for the people to determine their own destiny still exists. It doesn't within the EU as unelected bureaucrats determine policy in Britain and other nations including immigration. Come in through Turkey and you can waltz into Britain. The EU is going to fall. For those who say, "at what cost" I remind them Britain once ruled the world without the EU, there is no reason they cannot be a strong power without the EU, none.

Stand up for what they want? The majority of Brexit voters still don't even understand what they voted for or the disastrous implications it has for their country.

But congrats - they can look back fondly at that time they gave politicians the finger, except for the right wing nuts who convinced them to vote for exit based on false promises and a bizarre idea that they could retain all of the benefits of the EU and bear none of the costs.

Still, after all this, I doubt anyone in the government has the balls to actually trigger Article 50.

Carloslassiter: The majority of Brexit voters still don't even understand what they voted for or the disastrous implications it has for their country. - You sir have no idea what you're talking about. The EU, needs Britain more than Britain needs the EU. You're saying the Brexiters are idiots and the people that voted to stay are more informed? That is arrogant BS. The "People" spoke and they took their nation out of the EU, that is a victory for 'the people" over the globalists. A free an independent Britain is going to be stronger!
