Should Alfa Romeo Consider A Supercar To Spearhead A Comeback?

Alfa Romeo's ongoing global relaunch is being headed by the Giulia, particularly the 510 PS Quadrifoglio. But what if Alfa wanted a supercar to spearhead its line up? What would such a car look like? Perhaps something like this.

Dubbed the Alfa Romeo Furia and dreamt up by Polish designer 'Breshke Design', the car has been inspired by Alfas of yesterday as well as a host of more modern vehicles in a package which combines beauty, elegance and sporting prowess in the best way possible.

"If you find yourself in a hole the first thing you do is to stop digging"...Will Rodgers. Alfa Romeo has been in a hole a long time and is still digging. Time to stop and get their head above ground. The last thing they need or can afford is a supercar!

In the scheme of things at FCA - Alfa is not the brand that would get a supercar - that is the position that Maserati holds. Maserati was/is supposed to be the "exotic" sports car division that would compete with the now independent Ferrari - although it never will accomplish that one. But - giving the supercar to Alfa would be an indication that FCA is giving up on Maserati - nothing less.

The 4C was supposed to be their halo car, but the Alfa Fiero did nothing for them. Alfa needs to make competent, near-premium products. No one will take Alfa seriously as a premium. They will need to demonstrate competence at the Acura level and earn respect. Besides FCA has Maserati and (sort of) Ferrari as the halos.

The 8C was supposed to be their halo car. The 4 cylinder 4C can never fill that role.

The 4C was a total disaster. Once the handful of initial crazies buying it, sales evaporated. The 8C was also a terrible disaster. No one was interested in it.

Alfa Romeo has no brand identity in the USA. Mini had no brand identity either, but BMW hired an excellent ad agency to create the mystique where none existed in the USA. THAT is what Alfa Romeo needs NOT a halo car.

Alfa should work on easing/erasing their reputation of selling unreliable vehicles.

Second, they need to be very aggressive on pricing, meaning they need to undercut the competition.

You would think they would have learned something from overpricing Maseratis and then having to do steep discounts. Buying a Ghibli for the price of a loaded Chrysler 300 is easy.

I predict a flurry of people buying the Giulia and then sales will die. The same happened with the Ghibli. Early adopters bought the latest thing and then crickets were heard at the dealer.

Alfa folks in the USA are running around in Giulias as we speak.
