GM Thinks It Will Reel In Jeep With An All New Jimmy/Blazer - Is It Really That Simple?
Cars that ascend to the status of a popular cult-classic are usually ones that will guarantee the lucky automaker a monopoly for years to come. However, the trouble starts when a competing company decides to introduce an answer to promptly end the sales frenzy. Chevrolet’s unveiling of the Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang is one such example, and now, Automotive News is reporting that General Motors is gunning for another unchallenged rival, the Jeep Wrangler.

Why not just buy Jeep from FCA? Sergio might enjoy the hug.

MDarringer,
Why do you think the CAFE standards have been suspended?

@Truthy clearly you're not following the news:

I'm not a Jeep guy, but my understanding is that there is fierce loyalty amongst people who are. Getting and owning a Jeep is all about Jeep™, the real deal, not simply any 4WD vehicle. I don't think GM has Jeep's brand recognition or cachet.

Had they done a "Wrangler" with Hummer they might have had a shot. I would argue that Ford has a better shot at Jeep if the were to resurrect the first Bronco's set up.

The post makes it seem like the Camaro is the perfect strategy. The Camaro followed the Mustang to market by only a couple of years and it earned its "challenger" status the hard way. The "Wrangler" has been around for 75 years and popping out a competitor will not make it fall.

How many 911 killers have come and gone?

GM should cut a deal to buy Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, and Jeep from FCA which is what Sergio wants. They then kill Dodge and Chrysler and use the volume of Ram to to get a 400-500K unit advantage over Ford in the pickup wars.

You read my mind - about making a "Wrangler" - a Hummer. Much depends on whether FCA gets its act together with Jeep reliability - which has been pretty bad. THe problem - of course - is that it would be hard for a newcomer from Ford or GM to claim they would be better. Neither the "Bronco" nor the "Blazer" would actually be able to compete with the original type Jeep though.

GM is currently slightly outselling Ford when you combine GMC and Chevy in pick ups - against FORD. The problem is the mileage standards though - Neither FORD nor GM really can afford to sell as many trucks as a combined Ram/GM might. They would need to sell a whole lot of smaller cars to make up the difference - something that is not too profitable. And GM has no need for anything FCA has - they already have put the money into newer platforms/engines - something Jeep needs but does not have. FCA wanted to combine with Gm for its platforms and engines.

GM should wait a while - as in all cases - eventually the Jeep will ebb - as it has done in the past - and Gm will have the new product to compete.

Matt -
Matt:
ALL I have seen indicates that they are changing the MIX based on the percentage of cars and trucks for the overall corporate target - AND they increased the penalties for missing the mark. So while the Overall target will go down for a company - the actual mileage for an individual class of car (Based on the "footprint" of the car - a calculation of wheelbase and track) is still in place and the cars must still meet those standards. If you have seen something else - give me a link

@TomM and that is the equivalent of suspension. Is it still in force as written? NOPE!
