Volkswagen's New SUV Will Have An Pronounceable American Name
Volkswagen AG executives broke from convention while debating the name of the midsize VW crossover launching in the U.S. next year: They let the North American team pick it.

Normally, a committee in Germany would have decided on a single global name starting with "T," following the pattern of the Tiguan and Touareg crossovers before it, says Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of VW's recently formed Volkswagen North America region. Instead, Woebcken says the new crossover, crucial to VW's post-scandal recovery hopes, will have a "bullish, much easier to pronounce, American-style name" unique to the market.

I thought I felt a chill in the air. Hell will have frozen over if this VW gets a non-stupid name.

If I were VW, I would rename the entire line--with the possible exception of the Jetta--as vehicles are replaced. That would allow VW to pretend they are the New VW.

And their marketing has to go there.

The Tiguan was a total failure, but the new one has a chance, so give it a new name. American "desert" names offer plenty potential for their crossovers.

I enjoyed my Tiguan. I don't think it was a failure. What it was, was overpriced for the equipment it contained (especially that lousy RNS-510).

But I agree that the Tennessee SUV needed a more conventional name. Glad to see that VWoA is finally exerting a little control over their product here. What works in Germany doesn't necessarily work here.

Failure: overpriced, wrong-sized, dismal sales

While it is possible that a catchy name MIGHT result in better sales - the problem is that is rare. Too much has been said about the unpronounceable names given to VW vehicles - but in the end - the problem is NOT the names - it is the Vehicles - they are largely European spec'ed vehicles that don't sell well in the USA - much in the way USA spec'ed vehicles don't sell well in Europe. Toyota learned early on - and other Japanese have followed - that they have to produce some cars for the AMERICAN market (THe camry is an example - it is too wide for Japan). Now - f VW or Toyota actually produced cars that were sized for the US market - and actually looked good too (VW is too conservative - their cars look old really quickly) - they would really have something. It is that they did not allowed Ford and GM to catch up.

Still - we need another Harley Earl or Bill Mitchell to bring STYLE back to General Motors - because GM car sold because they simply looked better than the competition.

Oh Tommy @TomM your masturbatory bullshit is so amusing.

You want to appear to be the elder statesman with wisdom, but you blow it with rambling nothingness and wannabe data.

There is a name floating around and if it is accurate, it's terrible.

VW wanted to call the Toureg the Colorado, but someone had taken it.

We all know that the brand name means more than the model name.

Where did you get this gem: "We all know that the brand name means more than the model name."?

911 means more than Porsche.
Corvette means more than Chevrolet.
Mustang means more than Ford.
Beetle means more than VW.
Prius means more than Toyota.

The name being whispered elsewhere is Terramont.

You've been inhaling too many fumes!

Porsche could license the nameplate "911" tomorrow to "any distant entity" for millions of dollars/euros/water buffalos and introduce a the next gen car and it would still sell.

GM could kill the Corvette tomorrow and it would still survive, as Ford with the Mustang as VW did with Beetle.

People buy more Camry's than Prius, Fusions and Escorts/Focus than Mustangs.
